🌧️🌍 CBMA Projects – Science in the Making: URBAnWat3r
Can stormwater runoff put freshwater ecosystems at risk?
When rain falls in urban areas, it washes pollutants from roads, buildings and other surfaces into streams, rivers and lakes — often without treatment.
💧 URBAnWat3r, led by Bruno Castro (CBMA/IB-S, School of Sciences of University of Minho), investigates how (sub)urban stormwater runoff affects freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem health.
The project combines:
🔬 Chemical analysis of stormwater
🐟 Ecological and ecotoxicological assessments
🌱 Evaluation of impacts on aquatic ecosystems
🤝 Stakeholder engagement on stormwater management
Working across three pilot areas, URBAnWat3r brings together expertise in aquatic ecology, ecotoxicology, science communication and education to support healthier and more resilient urban water systems.
📍 Consortium: CBMA (University of Minho), Centre for Functional Ecology (University of Coimbra) and Faculty of Sciences (University of Porto).
