In 1994, Michael Porter presented an analysis of the competitiveness of the Portuguese economy. As part of the work on the Knitting Cluster, António Gonçalves, representing TMG, was a member of the group that worked directly on this study.

More than three decades later, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟰 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 – 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗹: 𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟰-𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱-𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬, by André Paula Santos, Alcino Lavrador and Bruno Damásio, revisits the original assessment, looks at the path taken by Portugal’s clusters and explores the challenges and opportunities ahead towards 2030. And TMG is once again part of this reflection.

A lot has changed between these two moments. The industry has changed. Portugal has changed. And so has TMG. From a company rooted in the textile industry, we have evolved into a diversified business group, with new capabilities, technologies and areas of activity, including the automotive industry.

Two snapshots, more than 30 years apart, that also tell part of the story of the transformation of Portuguese industry – and of our own journey.

Today marks the 112th anniversary of the birth of Manuel Gonçalves, the entrepreneur, philanthropist and industrial pioneer who founded TMG in 1937.

His vision laid the foundations of a company that has continued to evolve across generations, industries and markets. As we approach 𝗧𝗠𝗚’𝘀 𝟵𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳, we look back at the ambition that started it all and the journey that has brought us to where we are today.

Awarded with the insignia of 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁, Manuel Gonçalves was recognised for his contribution to Portuguese industry. His pioneering spirit remains an important part of TMG’s identity, reflected in our commitment to innovation, excellence, integrity and sustainable growth.

Today, TMG is a diversified industrial group that continues to develop new solutions, explore new opportunities and respond to the challenges of an ever-changing world. As we prepare to celebrate nine decades of history, we remain committed to building on the foundations laid by our founder while shaping the next chapter of our journey.

TMG Automotive has been honoured with the 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱, presented by the Portugal-US Chamber of Commerce, in recognition of its contribution to strengthening the economic relationship between Portugal and the United States.

We recently hosted the 𝗪𝗣𝟭 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 of the 𝗣𝗕𝗔 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮 in our facilities. The meeting brought together the consortium partners to review the work carried out, share key results and align on the next steps of the project.

In addition to the working sessions, participants had the opportunity to visit TMG Automotive s production facilities, gaining first-hand insight into our manufacturing capabilities, innovation activities and the development of advanced materials for the automotive industry.

Our CEO, Isabel Furtado, has been honoured with the ECO/CIMPOR 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲. Presented at the 𝗘𝗖𝗢/𝗖𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗥 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀, this distinction recognises outstanding careers in the Portuguese business landscape.

With decades of dedication to industry, Isabel Furtado has been a strong advocate for innovation, internationalisation, sustainability and the promotion of knowledge as key drivers of development and competitiveness.

Upon receiving this award, she highlighted that this recognition reflects a journey built alongside many people, emphasising that no career is built alone and that challenges can be transformed into opportunities through vision, knowledge and the ability to adapt.
