We start to say goodbye to the warm days of summer and surrender to the shorter days and lower temperatures that are coming. It has been a productive summer with important missions accomplished around the house.

We have paved the main access to the house with rustic stones and it has definitely been a great upgrade that was beyond late! Check stories to see the before and after process or the highlights to see the transformation.

We also did an under roof on the balcony to get access to this part of the house all year round regardless of the weather, altogether with the new flooring and it feels great.

We have also had a great Airbnb season meeting amazing people from all over the world which we are so grateful they choose to stay with us.

The garden has kept us busy and happy as it evolves in its own pace but it hasn’t been the best year at all. Things got so delayed weather wise and it seemed like nothing was really in time as normal. I guess that nature dictates its own rhythm and we learn to adjust accordingly.

Living, learning, loving… let the winter come!

Autumn delights at

Nothing more promising than loads of citrus fruits hanging from the trees 🍊 beautiful and generous beings, the orange grove keeps blooming. Not fully ripe yet but looking like fresh juice for all winter and beyond.

Nopal cactuses and their edible fruit 🍃The prickly pear “Tuna” in Spanish, is the fruit of the nopal, a cactus plant, native to Mexico, and which was introduced to Europe by the Spanish conquerors. Careful while handling but so delicious and unique, comes also loaded with family memories and that always tastes special.

The glorious Sicilian lemons 🍋 so huge they are right now it’s unbelievable, some fruit are around 12cm tall 😅 part of the Citrus genus, these are a category of multiple lemon varieties belonging to the Rutaceae family. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and is a region in Italy known for its citrus production. Lemons have been grown on the island since the 10th century, and throughout history, many varieties of lemons have been cultivated, generally labeled under the Sicilian lemon name.

The beauty of the garden over the months and its wonderful surprises and never ending teachings.

Curry plants found by my geek Brazilian friend Celso while visiting a few weeks ago… the ultra tech guy using plant recognition apps non stop 🍃 what a delightful surprise and knowledge added to our lives. Curry plants and curry trees are two different things. The flavourful and aromatic perennial herb finished into yellow powder comes from the curry plant and grows abundantly in the Mediterranean climate whilst the Indian famous curry dishes use the leaves of the tree. Indian curries don’t taste like curry at all if you know what I mean!

Second harvest of my preferred cambuci, also known as archbishop’s hat chilli peppers, not too spicy when young but a lot hotter while maturing and then fading to sweet again after some time if used in oils… grew this from seed and the plants are massive, healthy and can overcome the winter. Happy days!

Admiring daily the effect that the garden has over us, the beauty of the process, the dedication and frustration when things don’t go too well… all in one the pleasures totally overcome the pain.

Bloom of the artichokes has to be a magic one… it’s hard to harvest them all before witnessing the beauty of such a unique flower… and of course let life follow its course and gather more seeds.

Earlier this year another friend Charlotte confirmed that the sea of tinny Daisy’s looking flowers are indeed camomile 🌼 now we need learning how to harvest them as these are thousands covering big parts of the olives groves.

Enormously grateful for this life and the shift towards this green journey. So far so really amazing.

It’s starting to look a lot like summer! What a long winter we had… mega rush to get the outdoors ready for our third Airbnb season and thank god all the needed got done.

We changed the canopy cover to a more organic and good looking material beautifully achieved by this bamboo fencing. Now we have tiles flooring and a new paint on the plunge pool, yet, the water is so but so cold that no one but us have used it 😅 It’s a joy to refresh the body and carry on the duties around the house.

Other progresses are ongoing and some awesome news are just about to be confirmed so we can’t wait to share it all with you… let’s just get all the confirmations and get ready for very busy times ahead of us.

It’s year three at 😄 Time really goes so fast… This has been so far the longest winter during these 3 years. It started raining in October and the rain hasn’t properly stopped yet! Feels more like a long monsoon but one cannot complain as the gardens are lushly green, soaked wet from north to south of the country making things a lot easier for when the summer months come.

The soil feels soft and easy to dig. Now with warmer temperatures the plants are growing like crazy, the air feels so fresh and clean, the water collection points are overflowing, bamboo shoots went from a few to hundreds, wells are full full full, birds are back singing all day long and rainbows give us the most magic shows very often…

The routine around the Quinta stays always very interesting and the dedication to it hasn’t lost its appeal at all…

More projects just about to get finished as our chicken traktor/coop (very delayed) and the wood shack that will be transformed into a good sized outdoors kitchen; also an outdoors compost toilet, a balcony under roof to stop the water down the patio and who knows how many other things could be done this year. Excited to get hands on with everything as soon as the rain allows us to!

Let’s enjoy what it seems to be the last fresh and wet days this year and get ready for another dry/summer season just ahead of us.

In Portugal, olive oil is used in the production of soaps, moisturisers, cuticle creams, hair masks, lip balms, among others.

It’s been a long winter but spring is just around the corner and the announcement of another year of abundant, quality and organic produce right now is represented by these tiny baby fig shootings which start covering the trees ✨ generous nature!
