The Amália open-source version release - a large language model developed from the ground up for European Portuguese - represents a milestone for Portugal’s technological sovereignty. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐈 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?

In his latest opinion article, Carlos Gonçalves, researcher at CCG/zgdv Institute, looks beyond the chatbot interface to address what it really takes to turn AI’s potential into solutions that can be applied in business: data, secure architectures, RAG, autonomous agents, specialisation, and integration into real-world workflows.

A reflection on the “invisible engineering” that separates a technology demonstration from a system capable of creating real value, and on a future where specialised AI agents collaborate with one another and with people.
