Last Wednesday, Clara Rodrigues, from WavEC’s Marine Environmental and Licensing Team, took part in a working session within the framework of the Gulbenkian Blue Carbon project.

Promoted by WWF Portugal with the support of the Directorate-General for Maritime Policy (DGPM), the initiative brought together a range of organisations at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to discuss the Forum’s strategic positioning, share relevant projects focused on blue carbon ecosystems in Portugal, and review the proposed structure for the National Forum.

Through this participation, WavEC reaffirms its commitment to contributing technical and scientific expertise, supporting monitoring methodologies, data organisation, and practical recommendations that can accelerate action and strengthen decision-making on blue carbon.

🌊 Smart environmental monitoring ensures sustainability 🌱.

In the project, innovation and respect for the marine environment go hand in hand. Through high-tech sensors and regular sampling, the team monitors water quality, fish health and the state of the ocean ecosystem.

📍 The first environmental monitoring campaign was recently completed at PLOCAN's marine test center (Taliarte), collecting key data to ensure that the floating wind platform and pilot fish farm operate in perfect harmony with marine life.

🔬 This pioneering approach ensures that the production of renewable energy and seafood products is developed responsibly, contributing to the preservation of our oceans.

📢 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲: 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 & 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗱𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗼 (𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝟭)

WavEC is happy to share a 𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 mapping and characterising the seabed within the 𝗭𝗟𝗧 (Zona Livre Tecnológica - Technological Free Zone) offshore of 𝗩𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗱𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗼, Portugal.

This report presents key findings from the first survey phase, providing a detailed analysis of the 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, 𝘀𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, and 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀.

The study was supported by oceanographic surveys aboard the NRP "D. Carlos I" (March 2023) and NRP "Andrómeda" (October 2023), collecting 𝗮𝗰𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 to inform the seabed profile.

🔎 Key insights:
✅ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗱: Predominantly smooth with a gentle 0.34° slope, except for a localized rocky outcrop and small geological depressions.
✅𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: A consistent sedimentary cover, ranging from fine silt to very coarse sand.
✅𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀: Three distinct sedimentary layers identified, with the top layer averaging ~13m thickness.

Commissioned by WavEC to Instituto Hidrográfico - Marinha Portuguesa as part of the -SCORES project, this report provides critical data for the engineering and deployment of floating offshore renewable energy projects.
