Reconditioning barrels: Economy or Art? ⚒️🔥
There’s still a certain stigma in the distillation world surrounding reconditioned barrels. Many associate the process only with cost reduction, but the reality is much richer (and more technical) than that.
The STR (Shaved, Toasted, Re-charred) process, for example, isn’t just about giving wood a “second life.” It allows:
✅ Exposing fresh layers of oak that bring new flavor profiles.
✅ Reactivating sugars and aromatic compounds through new toasting.
✅ Promoting a much more sustainable and circular production.
The fear of inconsistency is giving way to respect for technique. Virgin oak has its value, but the mastery of knowing how to work a reconditioned barrel is what separates traditional producers from innovators.
And what about you? Do you still see reconditioning as a “plan B” or as an essential tool in the winery? 👇
