Procurement cannot compare prices when suppliers are quoting different risks.

As a procurement manager, you may think that all the quotes that you receive are taking into consideration the same variables. After all, it is the same part, the same drawing and volumes. But if every supplier understood the project differently, the comparison is already compromised.

โฌ› One supplier may include tooling risk while another may ignore it.
โฌ› One supplier may consider PPAP requirements while another may treat them as standard documentation.
โฌ› One supplier may identify critical tolerances another may assume that the drawing can be executed exactly as received.

At that point, procurement is not comparing suppliers but assumptions
And assumptions are dangerous because they usually become visible much later, when the project is already under pressure.

This is why a low price is not always a competitive offer and the biggest price may not be the part that you need.

Sometimes, it is simply an offer where part of the risk has not been seen, challenged, or included.
