Tusnad Eco Bear Conf

Tusnad Eco Bear Conf TusnadEcoBearConf

A conference about people and large carnivore, about coexistence.

Emellett lesz lehetőség célbalövést kipróbálni biztonságos lézerfegyverrel is. A konferenciát továbbá támogatják:
• a „TusnadEcoBear: Connect & Conserve” projekt, amely a Bears in Mind alapítvány finanszírozásában valósul meg;
• a „Co-creating coexistence: Advancing policies, practices, and stakeholder engagement for integrating wildlife and livestock into sustainable multi-functional landscapes in Europe” projekt, amelyet az Európai Unió Horizon Europe – Kutatási és Innovációs programja finanszíroz (támogatási szerződés száma: 101181958);

• proiectul „TusnadEcoBear: Connect & Conserve”, finanțat de fundația Bears in Mind;
• proiectul „Co-creating coexistence: Advancing policies, practices, and stakeholder engagement for integrating wildlife and livestock into sustainable multi-functional landscapes in Europe”, finanțat de programul Horizon Europe – Cercetare și Inovare al Uniunii Europene (acord de finanțare nr. 101181958);

🌍 BĂILE TUȘNAD IN THE INTERNATIONAL SPOTLIGHT: DW Environment
We are incredibly proud to share that the Deutsche Welle (DW News) team recently visited Băile Tușnad to investigate how a community can transform conflict into coexistence.

While mainstream media often focuses solely on the sensationalism of bear attacks, DW took the time to look deeper—focusing on prevention, real solutions, and the hard work that goes into making our town a positive global example.

As our team at Project Bag always emphasizes: the story of Băile Tușnad is not about denying the challenges. It is about actively addressing them through science, community engagement, and smart management.

🌟 KEYNOTE SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT: Anne Broeksma
How we talk about large carnivores shapes how we live alongside them. We are thrilled to announce our next Keynote Speaker for the 5th Conference: Anne Broeksma!

Anne is an acclaimed independent nature journalist, writer, and poet from the Netherlands, writing for National Geographic and leading Dutch national newspapers like NRC and De Groene Amsterdammer. She is also the co-founder of Environmental Grants. Her award-nominated book, ‘A Scaly Story’, tracked a seven-year journey across Asia and Africa, earning a spot on the "Best Books of 2024" list.

Currently, she is working on a literary nonfiction book exploring human coexistence with Europe’s large carnivores—bears, wolves, lynxes, and wolverines—driven by a profound question: What does territory truly mean for human and non-human animals?

At , Anne Broeksma will address:
✅ Bridging the critical gap between conservation science and mainstream media.
✅ Public communication about large carnivores in Europe: trends, failures, and hard-learned lessons.
✅ The power of "telling a proper story" to foster real-world coexistence.

🐻 Fun Fact: "As a child, I often had nightmares about large carnivores, especially about wolves and tigers in front of my bedroom door. That changed completely when I got the chance to be a carnivore keeper in a wildlife park for a day!"

🌟 KEYNOTE SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT: Christian-Radu Chereji
We are honored to welcome Christian-Radu Chereji, a leading expert in conflict analysis and the human dimensions of conservation, as a Keynote Speaker at the 5th Conference!

Christian-Radu is the Associate Dean of FSPAC and Director of the Conflict Studies Center at Babeș-Bolyai University. With extensive field experience across Romania, the Balkans, and Africa, he specializes in the "invisible" social infrastructures—the informal norms and community-based mechanisms that prevent conflict and sustain cooperation in natural resource management.

As he often notes from his fieldwork in the Apuseni Mountains: "Local shepherds can often predict bear movements more accurately than official wildlife reports, usually over coffee, not GPS data."

At , Christian-Radu Chereji will explore:
✅ The role of informal governance in preventing socio-environmental conflicts.
✅ Stakeholder intelligence and community-based resource management.
✅ How local traditions and social infrastructures sustain human-wildlife coexistence beyond formal institutions.

His insights will provide a crucial bridge between scientific data and the lived reality of local communities.
