HU: Egy borszéki villa helyreállítása és adaptív újrahasznosítása

A történelmi borszéki üdülőtelep központjában álló Borka-villa az egykori Osztrák–Magyar Monarchia boldog békeidőkbeli fürdőhelyeire jellemző fürdővárosi építészet jellegzetes emléke.
A helyreállítás szokásos kérdésein túl a legnagyobb kihívást a kisméretű szobákban a fürdőszobák kialakítása jelentette. A hagyományos, téglalap alakú leválasztás miatt alig lett volna bútorozható a szobák nagy része . Ezért alaprajzilag a fürdőket egy ferde üvegfal határolja le a szobától, vagyis egyetlen térszervező gesztus megőrzi a tér folytonosságát, és meglepő tágasságot kölcsönöz mindkét funkciónak.
A koncepció szerint régi borszéki képeslapok áttetsző nyomatai kerültek volna az üvegfalakra, a boldog békeidők és az egykori, pezsgő fürdőélet fénykorának felidézéseként. A bemutatott képek a megvalósult szobabelsők fényképei alapján készített fotómontázsok, ahol az üvegfallal lapcsolatos szándékunkat jelenítettük meg a már készen berendezett szobák üvegfalain. A más tervezők által jegyzett későbbi belsőépítészeti szakaszban ez az elképzelés végül nem valósult meg - Sic transit gloria mundi.

RO: Reabilitarea și reutilizarea adaptivă a unei vile din Borsec

Situată în centrul stațiunii istorice Borsec, Vila Borka este un exemplu reprezentativ al arhitecturii balneare specifice stațiunilor din fosta Monarhie Austro-Ungară în perioada La Belle Époque.
Dincolo de problemele obișnuite ale reabilitării și restaurării, principala provocare a fost amenajarea băilor în camerele de dimensiuni reduse. O compartimentare convențională, cu plan dreptunghiular, ar fi făcut dificilă mobilarea unei mari părți din camere. Prin urmare, băile sunt separate de cameră printr-un perete de sticlă dispus oblic în plan. Acest unic gest de organizare păstrează continuitatea spațiului și conferă ambelor funcțiuni o surprinzătoare generozitate.
Conceptul prevedea aplicarea pe pereții de sticlă a unor reproduceri translucide după cărți poștale vechi din Borsec, pentru evocarea atmosferei La Belle Époque și a perioadei de apogeu a vieții balneare de odinioară. Imaginile prezentate sunt fotomontaje realizate pe baza fotografiilor camerelor deja amenajate, prin care am reprezentat intenția noastră privind tratarea pereților de sticlă. În etapa ulterioară de amenajare interioară, realizată de alți proiectanți, această idee nu a mai fost pusă în practică - - Sic transit gloria mundi.

EN: The rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of a villa in Borsec

Located in the heart of the historic Borsec spa resort, the Borka Villa is a distinctive example of the spa-town architecture characteristic of the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy during the Belle Époque.
Beyond the usual challenges of rehabilitation and restoration, the main difficulty was introducing bathrooms into the small guest rooms. Conventional rectangular partitions would have made much of the available space difficult to furnish. The bathrooms were therefore separated from the bedrooms by glass walls set at an angle in plan. This single spatial gesture preserves the continuity of the interior and gives both functions a surprising sense of generosity.
The concept proposed applying translucent reproductions of historic Borsec postcards to the glass walls, evoking the atmosphere of the Belle Époque and the heyday of the resort’s once-vibrant spa life. The images shown are photomontages based on photographs of the already completed and furnished rooms, illustrating our intended treatment of the glass walls. This idea was ultimately not implemented during the subsequent interior-design phase, which was carried out by other designers - - Sic transit gloria mundi.

Hat évszázad rétegei Szacsván

Több mint hat évszázad története találkozik a Szacsva fölötti dombon álló templomban: középkori falképtöredékek, Szent László legendájának jelenetei és az 1761-ben festett, különleges és akomplex kazettás mennyezet.
A helyreállítás során a templom katolikus eredetét és a református közösség évszázadok alatt kialakult örökségét egyaránt igyekeztünk láthatóvá tenni. A kő- és üvegpadló a régészeti kutatás során feltárt középkori falak vonalát jelöli. Az északi homlokzaton újabb falképtöredékek kerültek elő egy ritkaságnak számító, külső imafülkében.
Megőrizve, ezek a rétegek egymást kiegészítve mesélik a szacsvai templom történetét.

Șase secole de straturi succesive la Saciova

Peste șase secole de istorie se întâlnesc în biserica de pe dealul Saciovei: fragmente de pictură murală medievală, scene din legenda Sfântului Ladislau și remarcabilul și complexul tavan casetat pictat în 1761. Prin restaurare, am urmărit să facem vizibile atât originile catolice ale bisericii, cât și moștenirea construită de comunitatea reformată de-a lungul secolelor. Pardoseala din piatră și sticlă marchează traseul zidurilor medievale descoperite în timpul cercetărilor arheologice. Pe fațada nordică au ieșit la lumină noi fragmente de pictură murală, aflate într-o rară nișă exterioară de rugăciune.
Păstrate împreună, aceste straturi se completează și spun povestea bisericii din Saciova.

Six Centuries in Layers at Saciova

More than six centuries of history come together in the church standing on the hill above Saciova: fragments of medieval wall paintings, scenes from the legend of Saint Ladislaus, and the remarkable and complex painted coffered ceiling dating from 1761.
Through the restoration, we sought to reveal both the church’s Catholic origins and the heritage created by the Reformed community over the centuries. The stone-and-glass floor traces the medieval walls uncovered during archaeological research. Further fragments of wall paintings were discovered on the northern façade, within a rare external prayer niche.
Preserved together, these layers complement one another and tell the story of the church in Saciova.

Vendégházak, Daniel kastély, Vargyas.

A kastély akkor élhet tovább, ha közösségi terei megőrzik rangjukat, működtetése pedig biztos alapokon áll. Ehhez több szálláshely volt szükséges, mint amennyit a történeti épületekben ki lehetett alakítani s a kastélyok értékes tereit sosem szabad vendégszobákra aprózni. A vendégházak ezért a park peremén, egy kevésbé érzékeny zöldterületen kaptak helyet. Távolról tömegük és anyaghasználatuk a vargyasi faluképbe simul; közelről viszont feltárul másik arcuk: a nappali/belépő a park felé néz, a megérkezéstől kezdve kapcsolatot teremtve a tájjal. Így a kastély közösségi terei tovább őrzik méltóságukat, a vendégházak pedig csendbenen kiegészítik az együttest: a falu felől házak, a park felől a természetre nyíló lakóhelyek.

Castelul poate continua să trăiască numai dacă spațiile sale comunitare își păstrează prestigiul, iar funcționarea ansamblului se sprijină pe baze solide. Era nevoie de mai multe locuri de cazare decât puteau fi amenajate în clădirile istorice, iar spațiile valoroase ale unui castel nu ar trebui niciodată fragmentate în camere de oaspeți.
Casele de oaspeți au fost, așadar, amplasate la marginea parcului, într-o zonă verde mai puțin sensibilă. Privite de la distanță, volumetria și materialele lor se integrează în imaginea satului Vârghiș; de aproape însă își dezvăluie cealaltă față: spațiul de zi și intrarea se deschid către parc, stabilind încă din momentul sosirii o legătură directă cu peisajul.
Astfel, spațiile comunitare ale castelului își păstrează demnitatea, iar casele de oaspeți completează discret ansamblul: către sat sunt case, către parc devin locuințe deschise naturii.

Guesthouses, Daniel Castle, Vârghiș

The castle can continue to live only if its communal spaces retain their dignity and the estate rests on a sound operational foundation. More accommodation was needed than the historic buildings could provide, while the valuable interiors of a castle should never be fragmented into guest rooms.
The guesthouses were therefore placed at the edge of the park, on a less sensitive green area. Seen from a distance, their volumes and materials blend into the village character of Vârghiș. Up close, however, they reveal another side: the living and entrance areas face the park, establishing a direct relationship with the landscape from the moment of arrival.
In this way, the castle’s communal spaces retain their dignity, while the guesthouses quietly complement the ensemble: houses towards the village, places of dwelling open to nature towards the park.

Gasztronómiai fordulat / Vargyas, Daniel-kastély

A műemlékek jövője kapcsán: a jól elvégzett helyreállítás alapfeltétel, de önmagában kevés. A döntő kérdés mindig az, hogy mitől lesz nélkülözhetetlen egy épület húsz, ötven vagy száz év múlva. Ezért minden műemléknek meg kell találnia azt a sajátos tartalmat, amely kizárólag belőle következik. Olyat, amelyet nem lehet máshová áthelyezni, mert a hely történetéből, építészetéből és emlékezetéből nő ki.
A vargyasi Daniel-kastélyban ezt a szerepet a XVII. századi uradalmi konyha töltheti be. A régészeti és falkutatási eredmények pontosan dokumentálták a történeti konyha helyét, udvari ételkiadó nyílását, kemencéjének ívét. Bornemisza Anna fejedelemasszony szakácskönyve, az utóbbi években a nagyközönség számára is hozzáférhetővé vált erdélyi ferences gasztronómiai hagyomány, valamint Erdély soknemzetiségű konyhakultúrája szilárd történeti alapot kínál ahhoz, hogy a Székelyföldön is továbbélő erdélyi gasztronómiai örökség újra élő gyakorlattá váljon.
Így lett a restaurálás kezdetén még értéktelen melléképületnek tartott gazdasági szárnyból a kastély jövőjének egyik legfontosabb pillére: az erdélyi történeti gasztronómia képző- és tudásközpontja. A megszülető tudásnak helye is lesz: a kastély hat különböző hangulatú tere kínál lehetőséget a közös étkezésre, a kóstolásra és a beszélgetésekre.
A cél, hogy a történeti tudás ismét a mindennapok részévé váljon. A műemlék értéke így – a történeti szubsztancia mellett – tapasztalásban, ízekben, mesterségbeli tudásban és közösségi élményekben él tovább.
Talán ez az operatív műemlékvédelem legfontosabb feladata: megtalálni minden műemlékben azt az egyedi lehetőséget, amely csak ott, csak abból a történetből születhet meg. Ettől válik a múlt öröksége a jövő erőforrásává, és ettől marad a műemlék hosszú távon élő.

Cotitură gastronomică / Castelul Daniel, Vârghiș

Viitorul monumentelor istorice depinde de mult mai mult decât o restaurare reușită. O intervenție de calitate reprezintă condiția de bază, însă nu este suficientă. Întrebarea decisivă este întotdeauna ce va face ca o clădire să rămână indispensabilă peste douăzeci, cincizeci sau o sută de ani. De aceea, fiecare monument trebuie să-și descopere propriul conținut, unic și inseparabil de locul său. Un conținut care nu poate fi mutat în altă parte, deoarece izvorăște din istoria, arhitectura și memoria locului.
La Castelul Daniel din Vârghiș, acest rol îl poate îndeplini bucătăria domenială din secolul al XVII-lea. Cercetările arheologice și studiile de parament au documentat cu precizie amplasamentul bucătăriei istorice, golul de servire către curte și arcul cuptorului. Cartea de bucate a principesei Bornemisza Anna, tradiția gastronomică franciscană transilvăneană, devenită accesibilă publicului larg în ultimii ani, precum și patrimoniul culinar multietnic al Transilvaniei oferă o bază istorică solidă pentru readucerea la viață a tradiției gastronomice transilvănene păstrate și în Ținutul Secuiesc.
Astfel, corpul gospodăresc considerat la începutul restaurării o anexă lipsită de valoare a devenit unul dintre cei mai importanți piloni ai viitorului castelului: un centru de formare și de cunoaștere dedicat gastronomiei istorice transilvănene. Cunoașterea dobândită își va găsi și spațiul firesc de manifestare: cele șase spații cu atmosfere diferite ale castelului vor oferi cadrul pentru mese comune, degustări și dialog.
Scopul este ca această cunoaștere istorică să redevină parte a vieții cotidiene. Valoarea monumentului continuă astfel să trăiască nu doar prin substanța sa istorică, ci și prin experiențe, gusturi, meșteșuguri și întâlniri între oameni.
Poate că aceasta este cea mai importantă misiune a protecției operative a monumentelor istorice: identificarea acelei posibilități unice pe care fiecare monument o ascunde și care poate lua naștere numai acolo, din propria sa istorie. Astfel patrimoniul trecutului devine o resursă pentru viitor, iar monumentul rămâne viu pe termen lung.

The future of a historic monument depends on far more than a successful restoration. High-quality conservation is an essential prerequisite, yet it is not enough on its own. The decisive question is what will make a building indispensable twenty, fifty or even one hundred years from now. Every monument must therefore discover the unique purpose that arises from its own history. It must be something that cannot simply be transferred elsewhere, because it grows out of the site's history, architecture and collective memory.
At Daniel Castle in Vârghiș, this role can be fulfilled by the seventeenth-century manorial kitchen. Archaeological investigations and building archaeology have precisely documented the location of the historic kitchen, its serving hatch opening onto the courtyard, and the arch of its oven. Princess Anna Bornemisza's cookbook, the recently rediscovered Transylvanian Franciscan culinary tradition, and the multicultural gastronomic heritage of Transylvania together provide a solid historical foundation for bringing back to life the culinary traditions of Transylvania that have also survived in Székely Land.
Thus, the service wing—once regarded at the beginning of the restoration as a valueless outbuilding—has become one of the key pillars of the castle's future: a training and knowledge centre dedicated to historic Transylvanian gastronomy. This knowledge will also find its natural setting: the castle's six distinct spaces will host shared meals, tastings and conversations.
The goal is to make historical knowledge part of everyday life once again. In this way, the value of the monument lives on not only through its historic fabric, but also through experience, flavours, craftsmanship and shared community life.
Perhaps this is the most important task of operative monument conservation: to discover the unique potential hidden within every historic monument—potential that can emerge only from that particular place and its own history. This is how the heritage of the past becomes a resource for the future, allowing the monument to remain alive for generations to come.

Paradigmaváltás előtt állunk: tulajdonképpen a restaurálás után kezdődik a műemlékvédelem.

Sokáig úgy gondoltuk, hogy a műemlékvédelem a felújítással véget ér. Kijavítjuk a tetőt , restauráljuk a nyílászárókat, kíméletesen bánunk a korabeli parkettel, megújulnak a sérült vakolatok, és a feladat teljesült.
Pedig éppen ekkor kezdődik a legfontosabb rész.
Egy kastély nem azért marad fenn, mert szépen restaurálták, hanem mert újra élettel telik meg. Mert látogatják, használják, vannak kik visszatérnek és saját emlékeiket is hozzáteszik a falai között eltelt évszázadokhoz.
Ez az operatív műemlékvédelem: a történeti szubsztancia megőrzése továbbra is alapfeladat, emellett ugyanilyen fontos, hogy a műemlék élettel teljen meg, legyen közössége és jövője.
A vargyasi Daniel-kastély reprezentatív termei ezért nem csupán arra várnak, hogy megcsodáljuk őket. Kisebb koncerteknek, előadásoknak, konferenciáknak és közösségi eseményeknek adhatnak otthont. De talán ennél is fontosabb az, ami két program között történik.
Az igazi érték sokszor egy hosszú beszélgetés. Egy találkozás, egy új ötlet, egy vita vagy egy közösen megfogalmazott gondolat. Egy műemlék akkor válik ismét a közösség részévé, amikor az emberek nemcsak megnézik, hanem boltívei alatt beszélgetnek egymással.
A falak őrzik a múltat. A beszélgetések teremtik meg a jövőt.

Ne aflăm în fața unei schimbări de paradigmă: de fapt, protejarea patrimoniului începe după restaurare.

Mult timp am crezut că protejarea monumentelor istorice se încheie odată cu restaurarea. Reparăm acoperișul, restaurăm tâmplăriile, păstrăm cu grijă parchetul istoric, refacem tencuielile deteriorate și considerăm că misiunea s-a încheiat.
În realitate, tocmai atunci începe partea cea mai importantă.
Un castel nu supraviețuiește pentru că a fost restaurat frumos, ci pentru că revine la viață. Pentru că oamenii îi trec pragul, îl folosesc, revin și adaugă propriile amintiri celor câteva secole de istorie păstrate între zidurile sale.
Aceasta este conservarea operativă a patrimoniului construit. Păstrarea substanței istorice rămâne misiunea fundamentală. La fel de important este însă ca monumentul să aibă o funcțiune, o comunitate și un viitor.
De aceea, sălile reprezentative ale Castelului Daniel din Vârghiș nu așteaptă doar să fie admirate. Ele pot găzdui concerte de mici dimensiuni, conferințe, prelegeri și evenimente comunitare. Dar poate și mai important este ceea ce se întâmplă între două programe.
Adevărata valoare se naște adesea dintr-o conversație îndelungată. Dintr-o întâlnire, o idee nouă, o dezbatere sau un gând formulat împreună. Un monument istoric redevine parte a comunității atunci când oamenii nu doar îl vizitează, ci stau de vorbă unii cu alții sub arcadele sale.
Zidurile păstrează trecutul. Conversațiile construiesc viitorul.

We are facing a paradigm shift: in reality, heritage conservation begins after restoration.

For a long time, we believed that heritage conservation ended when the restoration works were completed. We repair the roof, restore the windows and doors, carefully preserve the historic parquet floors, renew the damaged plaster, and consider the task accomplished.
In reality, this is precisely when the most important part begins.
A castle does not survive simply because it has been beautifully restored. It survives because it comes back to life. Because people walk through its doors, use its spaces, return again and again, and add their own memories to the centuries already held within its walls.
This is what I call operational heritage conservation. Preserving the historic fabric remains our primary responsibility. But it is equally important that a monument has a function, a community, and a future.
That is why the representative halls of Daniel Castle in Vârghiș are not waiting merely to be admired. They are meant to host intimate concerts, lectures, conferences and community events. Yet perhaps even more important is what happens between those events.
The greatest value often lies in a long conversation. A meeting, a new idea, a debate, or a shared thought. A historic monument truly becomes part of the community again when people do not simply visit it, but stop to talk beneath its arches.
Walls preserve the past. Conversations create the future.

Vargyas, Daniel kastély. A nagy közösségi terek mellett a kastély kisebb, személyesebb helyeket is kínál. A kis melegítőkonyha és a parkra nyiló reggelizőterasz csendes, emberléptékű ellenpontja a korábban bemutatott bisztrónak.

RO:
Vârghiș, Castelul Daniel. Dincolo de spațiile ample destinate comunității, castelul oferă și locuri mai mici, cu un caracter intim. Mica bucătărie de suport și terasa pentru micul dejun, deschisă spre parc, reprezintă contrapunctul calm, la scară umană, al bistroului prezentat anterior.

Daniel kastély / Vargyas / kortárs gesztusok a látogathatóságért.

Az élettelen műemlék csipkerózsika álmából támad fel, hogy újra használni kezdik. A kastélyrestaurálás következő kérdése a látogathatóság volt. Hogyan lehet úgy megérkezni, hogy legyen egy csésze kávé, egy könnyű ebéd, egy hely, ahol meg lehet állni, beszélgetni, várni a vezetés kezdetét vagy éppen lezárni a kastélyélményt?
A válasz elsőre kézenfekvőnek tűnt: egy bisztró a parkban. Csakhogy a tájképi park - bár nincs minősítve- önmagában is műemléki értéket képvisel s minden új épület elvesz belőle valamit, még akkor is, ha gondosan megtervezett.
A kastély reprezentatív termei sem jelenthettek megoldást. Ezek a terek a közösségé, a rendezvényeké. Egy kávézó más helyet kíván.
Maradt a kérdés: hová kerüljön?
Hosszú ideig nem volt rá jó válasz. Aztán az egykori istállók végében megkerült a hely. Innen a bisztró kiszolgálhatja a látogatókat, kapcsolódhat a kastély mindennapi életéhez, miközben szabadon hagyja a parkot és a reprezentatív tereket. Innen szinte minden látható... a fogadóudvar, az angolpark, a jellegzetes árkádsor.
Alapvető kérdés azonban, hogy az új funkciót kifejező kortárs beavatkozás magas minőséget képviseljen. De ugyanilyen fontos, hogy ez a kiegészítő építészet ismerje a saját szerepét. A műemlék mellett ő a másodhegedűs, nem a koncertmester. Nem uralni akarja a helyet, hanem gazdagítani.
Talán éppen ettől válik igazán izgalmassá.

Castelul Daniel / Vârghiș / gesturi contemporane pentru accesibilitatea vizitatorilor

Un monument istoric lipsit de viață se trezește din somnul Frumoasei din Pădurea Adormită atunci când este folosit din nou.
Următoarea întrebare în procesul restaurării castelului a fost legată de vizitare. Cum poate fi gândită sosirea vizitatorului astfel încât să existe posibilitatea unei cafele, a unui prânz ușor, a unui loc unde să poți sta, să porți o conversație, să aștepți începutul turului ghidat sau să închei în tihnă experiența castelului?
La prima vedere, răspunsul părea evident: un bistrou în parc. Numai că parcul peisager – deși nu beneficiază de o clasare individuală – reprezintă prin el însuși o valoare de patrimoniu, iar orice construcție nouă îi răpește ceva, chiar dacă este proiectată cu cea mai mare grijă.
Nici încăperile reprezentative ale castelului nu puteau constitui o soluție. Aceste spații aparțin comunității și evenimentelor. O cafenea are nevoie de un alt loc.
A rămas întrebarea: unde?
Mult timp nu a existat un răspuns convingător. Apoi, la capătul fostelor grajduri, locul s-a dezvăluit aproape de la sine. De aici, bistroul poate deservi vizitatorii și se poate integra firesc în viața de zi cu zi a castelului, lăsând nealterate parcul și spațiile reprezentative. De aici se vede aproape totul: curtea de onoare, parcul englezesc și caracteristica galerie cu arcade.
Rămâne însă esențial ca intervenția contemporană, menită să exprime noua funcțiune, să fie o arhitectură de cea mai bună calitate. La fel de important este însă ca această arhitectură complementară să-și cunoască propriul rol. Alături de monumentul istoric, ea este a doua vioară, nu dirijorul orchestrei. Nu urmărește să domine locul, ci să-i adauge valoare.
Poate tocmai de aceea devine cu adevărat interesantă.

A lifeless historic monument awakens from its Sleeping Beauty slumber when it begins to be used again.
The next question in the restoration of Daniel Castle concerned visitor experience. How can arrival be designed so that visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee, a light meal, a place to pause, to talk, to wait for the guided tour, or simply to conclude their visit in a relaxed setting?
At first, the answer seemed obvious: a bistro in the park. Yet the landscape park—although not individually protected—constitutes a heritage asset in its own right, and every new building takes something away from it, no matter how carefully it is designed.
The castle's representative rooms could not provide the solution either. These spaces belong to the community and to cultural events. A café requires a different setting.
So the question remained: where should it go?
For a long time, there was no convincing answer. Then, at the far end of the former stables, the right place revealed itself. From here, the bistro can serve visitors while naturally becoming part of the castle's daily life, leaving both the landscape park and the representative interiors untouched. From this point, almost everything is visible: the entrance court, the English landscape park, and the distinctive arcaded gallery.
One principle, however, remains fundamental: the contemporary intervention expressing the new function must embody architectural excellence. Equally important is that this complementary architecture understands its role. Beside the historic monument, it is the second violin, not the concertmaster. Its purpose is not to dominate the place, but to enrich it.
Perhaps this is precisely what makes it truly compelling—and successful.

Sokszor a legnagyobb veszteség a funkció eltűnése. A használatát vesztett épület gazdátlanná válik, és lassan pusztulásnak indul. Egy műemlék akkor marad élő, ha újra megtalálja azt a szerepet, amely fenntartja. Ez óhatatlanul új rétegeket hoz az épület történetébe. Az istállók egykor a birtok mindennapi működését szolgálták. Ma már nem tartanak bennük lovakat, ezért új szerepet kapnak: szállássá alakulnak. Ez a változás a kastély történetének újabb rétege. A legnagyobb kihívást a nagy, egybefüggő istállótér megőrzése jelentette. Az új szobák az egykori lóboxok logikáját idézik, formai másolás nélkül. A beépített egységek nem érnek fel az eredeti mennyezetig; a felettük végigfutó tükrözött sávnak köszönhetően a deszkamennyezet továbbra is egyetlen összefüggő térként érzékelhető. Így megmarad az istálló eredeti léptéke és hangsúlyos központi folyosója. Az új réteg együtt él a régivel. A történeti tér továbbra is olvasható, az új funkció pedig biztosítja, hogy az épület ismét használatba kerüljön és tovább éljen.

De multe ori, cea mai mare pierdere este dispariția funcțiunii. O clădire rămasă fără utilizare devine abandonată și începe încet să se degradeze. Un monument istoric rămâne viu doar dacă își regăsește rolul care îi asigură existența. Acest proces adaugă inevitabil noi straturi în istoria clădirii.
Grajdurile făceau odinioară parte din funcționarea de zi cu zi a domeniului. Astăzi nu mai adăpostesc cai, astfel că primesc o nouă funcțiune: devin spații de cazare. Această transformare reprezintă un nou strat în istoria castelului.
Cea mai mare provocare a fost păstrarea spațiului amplu și unitar al fostului grajd. Noile camere evocă logica boxelor de odinioară, fără a le reproduce formal. Volumele noi nu ating tavanul original, iar banda oglindită de deasupra lor păstrează percepția tavanului din scândură ca un spațiu continuu. Astfel se conservă scara inițială a interiorului și axul central al fostului grajd rămâne în continuare lizibil.
Noul strat coexistă cu cel vechi. Spațiul istoric rămâne ușor de citit, iar noua funcțiune asigură ca această clădire să fie din nou folosită și să-și continue viața.

A New Life for the Former Stables – Daniel Castle, Vârghiș

Often, the greatest loss is the disappearance of a building's function. Once left without use, a building becomes abandoned and gradually falls into decay. A historic monument remains alive only if it finds a role that can sustain it. This inevitably adds new layers to the building's history.

The stables were once an essential part of the estate's daily life. Today they no longer house horses and therefore take on a new function as guest accommodation. This transformation becomes another layer in the castle's history.

The greatest challenge was preserving the large, uninterrupted stable interior. The new rooms follow the logic of the former horse stalls without formally replicating them. The inserted volumes deliberately stop below the original ceiling, while a mirrored band above them preserves the perception of the timber ceiling as one continuous surface. This allows the original scale of the stable to remain legible, together with its prominent central aisle.

The new layer coexists with the old one. The historic space remains clearly readable, while the new function ensures that the building is once again inhabited and continues to live.

Rétegződések. Daniel-kastély, Vargyas. Talán ez a fotó/tükröződés átad valamit abból, mit jelent számunkra egy műemlék helyreállítása. A restaurálás nem csupán falakról, vakolatokról vagy részletekről szól. Sokszor a legnagyobb veszteség a funkció eltűnése és a közösség széthullása. Egy műemlék akkor marad élő, ha újra megtalálja azt a szerepet, amely fenntartja. Ez óhatatlanul új rétegeket hoz az épület történetébe. A feladat az összhang megteremtése: a múlt hitelességének megőrzése és a jelen természetes jelenléte - mert ez a műemlék és a közösség jövője.

Poate că această fotografie, surprinsă în reflexia unei ferestre, transmite ceva din ceea ce înseamnă, pentru noi, restaurarea unui monument istoric. Restaurarea nu înseamnă doar ziduri, tencuieli sau detalii arhitecturale. De multe ori, cea mai mare pierdere este dispariția funcțiunii și destrămarea comunității. Un monument rămâne viu doar dacă își regăsește rolul care îl poate susține în timp. Acest lucru adaugă inevitabil noi straturi în istoria clădirii. Provocarea este găsirea echilibrului dintre autenticitatea trecutului și prezența firească a prezentului. Aici se află viitorul monumentului – și, odată cu el, viitorul comunității.

Restoration is not only about walls, plaster, or architectural details. Very often, the greatest loss is the disappearance of a building's function and the fragmentation of its community. A historic monument remains alive only when it finds a role that can sustain it into the future. This inevitably adds new layers to the building's history. The challenge is to create harmony between the authenticity of the past and the natural presence of the present. That is what secures the future of the monument—and, with it, the future of its community.
