Dear BASTE Balkan Society of Textile Engineers members,

Nika Usmiani, a student at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Textile Technology, achieved historic success by winning first place in natural textile dye research at the prestigious international competition for young designers, "Colour for Tomorrow". The competition was organised by the research consortium Color4CRAFTS in collaboration with the Institute of Textiles in Manchester, aiming to promote natural dyes as a mainstream alternative to synthetic materials that pollute the environment.
Among 45 talented students from 17 countries – Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Montenegro, Estonia, Croatia, India, Indonesia, China, Nigeria, the Netherlands, Germany, Pakistan, Spain, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom – the Croatian design was declared the best.

The winning work, entitled "Nature as the Origin of Design", impressed the international jury with its innovative approach to sustainability and outstanding aesthetics. It is a design for a tie, an authentic Croatian symbol, made of linen and dyed and printed with natural plant dyes. This success places the University of Zagreb and the Faculty of Textile Technology among the leading global institutions in sustainable design and green technology.

Nika Usmiani's concept was inspired by the Velebit degenia, a protected Croatian endemic plant. Using the motifs of its four-petalled flower and distinctive yellow colour, Nika created a modern textile language that connects biodiversity and cultural heritage.

"This victory proves that natural dyes are not just part of the past, but a key strategy for the future of sustainable fashion. The tie was chosen as a highly visible format that requires precision, and the shades obtained from walnut shells, broć root, and marigold flower show that environmental responsibility can go hand in hand with luxury and sophistication," it was emphasised at the announcement.

Nika Usmiani's victory is also a success for the research team, which has many years of experience in natural textile dye research: Prof. Dr. Sc. Ana Sutlović, Prof. Dr. Sc. Martina Glogar, Doc. Dr. Sc. Iva Brlek, and Dr. Sc. Ivana Čorak, senior assistant.

The work was carried out as part of the institutional project "ZORA" (Green Technologies in Ecological Design), funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

Dear Baste members,

9th International Conference of the Doctoral School, which is free of charge for PhD students and will take place on-line, from 13 to 15 May 2026, at the “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University of Iasi (TUIASI).

This conference is dedicated to all PhD students from Technical Universities from Romania included in the Romanian Alliance of Universities of Science and Technology (ARUST), but not only

The goal is to share their research, to exchange ideas, and to make new connections.

The conference is a great chance for PhD students to refine their research methods, encourage interdisciplinary teamwork, and keep growing.

For three days, there will be panel sessions where PhD students can talk about and discuss their research papers.

The schedule also includes plenary conferences held by prominent professors from universities closely associated with TUIASI through collaborations.

This event aims to bring together different presentations covering important issues in the TUIASI thirteen doctoral fields, such as Chemistry, Computers and Information Technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, Information Technologies, Energetic Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Engineering and Management.

More information is available at: https://conferinta-csd.tuiasi.ro/

By connecting these scientific fields, encouraging innovation through teamwork, and focusing on international collaboration, the conference acts as a meeting point for new ideas and advancements in science.
This approach ensures that doctoral programs provide PhD students with the right skills and knowledge for jobs in social institutions, contributing to a sustainable economy.

For PhD students in the earlier stages of doctoral studies, the conference provides an opportunity to train for their first contributions to a certain scientific field, while for the PhD students in later stages, the communications held during conference can be seen as a scientific step towards the jobs market.
This connects with the university’s commitment to making courses more international, increasing mobility for students and staff, and promoting understanding between different cultures.
It also ties in with the university’s role as a partner in the European “Ingenium” project, which involves ten European institutions of higher education working together to improve study programs using digital tools shared within the INGENIUM Alliance.

Together, let’s bridge scientific fields, foster innovation through collaboration, and embrace the spirit of internationalization.

Join us in creating an academic intersection where new ideas flourish and progress takes center stage.

We look forward to your active participation and the joint impact we can make at this conference.
