What do cancer treatments, Antarctic climate reconstruction, and next-gen microchips have in common? Particle accelerators and nuclear physics.

On Oct 02, 2026, from 15:00-20:00, join the IFIN-HH team at the Universitatea POLITEHNICA din București Campus for an event inspired by European Researchers' Night 2026.

Here is what you can explore at our booth:
*Medical applications, how particle accelerators are used in targeted cancer therapy and in the production of radiopharmaceuticals for medical imaging.
*Climate archives, how accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) analyzes Antarctic ice samples to reconstruct Earth's climate history and track global warming.
*Materials engineering, how materials are tested and manipulated at the atomic level for green technologies and faster microchips.

Exhibits and demonstrations: scale models of particle accelerators, radiation detectors, augmented reality apps, microscopes, and Danubius, a radiocarbon-dated horse skull.

In June, researchers used the world’s most powerful laser to create a particle beam, which they sent blasting through a concrete wall and into a black van. The exercise produced a new sort of photograph—one that doesn’t rely on light at all.

After processing the data, a team at the Extreme Light Infrastructure Nuclear Physics (-NP) in Romania has now released images: a shadow of a pile of lead blocks perched between the wall and the van. For the first time, the researchers showed the images were created almost entirely by muons, high energy particles produced by the laser, they reported in a preprint posted to arXiv this week.

First clean pictures from a muon beam point to a new way to peer inside suspicious packages and ancient structures

We had a fantastic time hosting dr. Mikko Laitinen from the University of Jyväskylä for our General Seminar.

Mikko took us on a journey through ToF-ERDA, the state-of-the-art technique shaking up how we analyze solar, IC, and battery materials. While traditional methods (foil-ERDA) stick to light helium ions, Mikko’s team goes one step forward with chlorine, copper, and iodine to profile everything from hydrogen to uranium at a nanometer scale.

The highlight? Showing Mikko around the Applied Nuclear Physics Department - DFNA lab and geeking out over our 3 MV Tandetron accelerator. We suspect our Tandetron made quite an impression or maybe it was just mutual accelerator admiration.
Check out the beautiful photos below from the seminar and the lab tour which eventually turned into a first hands-on session.

Could an advanced ToF-ERDA setup be the next addition to our facility? The future looks bright (and very well-profiled). 😃

A lone stirrup bridging nine centuries of silence.
Thank you, Vasile Diaconu - archaeologist.

XI-XII.

Cine a restaurat obiectul?

Cine a descoperit piesele?

The 24th edition of the Ion Beam Modification of Materials conference (IBMM-24, https://www.helsinki.fi/en/conferences/ibmm-2026) brought together worldwide scientists at the University of Helsinki.
The elections for new members of the International Committee gave us the opportunity to have the first Romanian representative in this distinguished community, in the person of Gihan Velişa, from Applied Nuclear Physics Department - DFNA.
Andrei Hotnog and Burducea Ion attended IBMM for the first time, but they felt the attraction of this vivid field and promised to return.
