How to Fold Your Karate Gi Properly

A karate gi is more than just a training uniform. It represents discipline, respect, and the traditions of karate. Taking a few minutes to fold your gi neatly after each training session not only keeps it clean and wrinkle-free but also reflects the mindset of a true martial artist. In many dojos, students are encouraged to care for their equipment because respect begins with the smallest habits.

The poster above presents two practical methods for folding a karate gi. While the techniques are slightly different, both achieve the same goal: creating a compact, organized package that is easy to carry and store.

Method 1: "Maki no Gi" (Rolling Method)

The rolling method is ideal for karate practitioners who travel frequently or have limited space in their training bag.

Start by laying the gi jacket flat on a clean surface with the sleeves spread evenly. Fold one sleeve across the chest and then fold the other sleeve over it. Next, fold the sides of the jacket inward to create a long rectangle. Fold the karate pants in half lengthwise and place them neatly on top of the folded jacket. Begin rolling tightly from one end while keeping the fabric smooth and wrinkle-free. Once the roll is complete, wrap your karate belt around the gi and tie it securely. This creates a compact bundle that stays together during transport.

The rolling method reduces wrinkles, saves space, and makes it easy to pack your gi inside a backpack or sports bag.

Method 2: "Shikaku no Gi" (Square Fold Method)

The square fold is commonly used for storage at home or for displaying a neatly folded uniform before training.

Lay the gi jacket flat and fold the sleeves inward. Fold both sides toward the center to form a rectangle. Place the folded pants on top of the jacket. Fold the bottom section upward and then fold the top downward until a compact square is formed. Finally, wrap the karate belt around the folded gi to hold everything securely in place.

This method creates a professional appearance and keeps the uniform neat while preventing unnecessary creases.

Why Folding Your Gi Matters

Many beginners think folding a gi is simply about keeping things tidy. In reality, it teaches important values found throughout traditional karate.

A neatly folded gi shows respect for your instructor, dojo, and fellow students. It also demonstrates personal responsibility by taking care of your equipment. Proper folding extends the life of the fabric by reducing unnecessary stretching and wear. A well-maintained gi also presents a cleaner, more professional appearance during competitions, seminars, and grading examinations.

Developing this simple habit encourages discipline outside the dojo as well. Just as karate emphasizes precision in every technique, folding your gi carefully reinforces patience, attention to detail, and consistency.

A Reflection of Karate Spirit

Karate is not only about punches, kicks, or self-defense. It is a lifelong journey of self-improvement. Every action—from bowing before entering the dojo to folding your gi after class—reflects the principles of humility, respect, and discipline.

Whether you choose the rolling method or the square folding method, the important thing is to perform it with care and consistency. Small habits practiced every day build the mindset of a true karateka. Respect your uniform, and it will remind you of the values that karate seeks to cultivate: respect, discipline, focus, strength, and honor.

【Legendary Karate Master】
SKIF Hirokazu Kanazawa's Shotokan Karate-do

Kanazawa sensei's activities gained a great achievement in the spread of karate to overseas people who still don't know "what is karate?".

Today we would like to introduce Hirokazu Kanazawa's words.

Kanazawa sensei said.

"A mountain is once reached at the top is one place but there are many ways to get up there. I will be 76 years old soon.

I realized there are many techniques that we cannot do when we get old. but I also found that there are techniques that we can do only when we are aged.

I would like to train KARATE throughout my life. "
