Professor J.M. ROTTER was born in Chesterfield, England and graduated at Cambridge University when he was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship to study in Australia. He got a PhD in civil engineering from the University of Sydney. His main specialty is the Buckling of Shells.

With a history of 25 years, the Civil Engineering in English (ICE) bachelor program represents the first offer of the Politehnica University Timisoara to students from abroad, with the purpose to provide a modern educational system, compatible with the one in EU countries and which could enable the practice of the civil engineer profession in the globalized context.
The program represents an inter-disciplinary domain focused on the formation of civil engineers (designers, contractors and researchers) having the capacity to analyse and design civil buildings in the actual market conditions.
ICE provides the adequate skills for engineers in order to control the design, construction, rehabilitation, exploitation and maintenance of new and existing buildings of all types, by using classic and modern building materials.
The study program is conceived to develop the abilities of the engineer for individual study as well as for teamwork interactions. Based on the European Bologna approach, the educational process is assured by lectures, internships and continuous interaction with the economical actors from the domain of civil engineering. The teaching staff is well prepared on teaching in English and international exchanges students are attending the ICE courses.
The evolution and progress of the Civil Engineering in English study program is tightly related (by its very nature) to international cooperation and university exchanges. A first step was an individual initiative - meeting of the Dean of the Civil Engineering Faculty with Mr. John Scott, Bsc(Hons) CEng MIstructE MCIOB, from Edinburgh, U.K in 1992 - followed by Romanian students mobility from Timisoara to Edinburgh, partly sponsored by the UK Institution of Structural Engineers, Scottish Branch. The relations evolved later in 1998, by means of the creation of the Scottish-Romanian University Exchange (SRUE), as a non-profit organization providing technical documentation and sponsoring student/staff exchanges.

The focus of “Advanced Design of Steel and Composite Structures” Master Course is to provide attendees the engineering ability and know-how to design and construct safe steel and composite steel and concrete structures including environmental aspects, enhancing the sustainability and competitiveness of the industry.
The ADS Master Course represents an educational program that trains high-level specialists with the orientation towards the domain of steel and composite steel and concrete structures. The master program corresponds to the requirements of an international labor market, for which the master graduates can integrate activities specific to their grounding for finding the most favorable opportunities.
The program assures the continuation and completion of the bachelor degree studies through advanced analysis and design methods applied to steel and composite steel and composite structures. Robustness of structures, fire safety use of new structural materials and other topics related to safety of structures are addressed to students. The program allows the initiation of the trainees in the research activities.
