The Çanakkale Bridge in Turkey, the longest suspension bridge in the world with a 2,023m main span, is often celebrated for what you can see.

But the real story is in what you don’t see.
On mega-projects like this, the biggest risks are rarely in the final structure. They sit in the construction stages when the bridge doesn’t yet behave like a bridge. Partial systems, changing load paths, temporary stability, wind exposure… this is where projects are most vulnerable.

And yet, this is also the part that is often under-scoped, underpriced, or treated as an afterthought.

Temporary works and er****on engineering are not just supporting activities, they are the backbone of constructability. They dictate whether a design can actually be built, safely and efficiently. Because in reality, you’re not just designing a bridge. You’re designing how the bridge comes into existence.

“Temporary” does not mean low importance or low risk. In many cases, it carries the highest level of uncertainty, complexity, and risk.

The team at Tony Gee and Partners had the opportunity to be involved in the temporary works design and checking of several of these critical systems for Canakkale Bridge, from cable installation works to deck er****on gantries. A strong reminder that behind every iconic structure, there is a hidden layer of engineering that ultimately determines its success.

King Fahad National Library مكتبة الملك فهد الوطنية: A Saudi Architectural Landmark & Masterpiece in the Heart of Riyadh 🇸🇦📚✨

In the heart of Riyadh’s Olaya district, King Fahad National Library stands out as more than a public building, it’s a national symbol of learning, culture, and modern Saudi identity. Its transformation, completed and opened around 2013, reshaped the library into a landmark that connects the city’s past with its ambitions ahead.

What makes the architecture unique is the expansion approach: instead of replacing the original structure, the project wrapped the existing library inside a new, larger one, a powerful idea that turns the building itself into a message of continuity and respect for legacy.

The library’s signature feature is its patterned outer skin, an elegant reinterpretation of Islamic geometry. But it’s not only aesthetic: the tensile membrane façade is designed to filter harsh sunlight and reduce heat, creating comfort and daylight in Riyadh’s climate.

Inside, the library functions as a civic hub as much as a research center, bringing together reading spaces with cultural and public amenities like exhibition areas and visitor facilities.

King Fahad National Library proves that modern Saudi architecture can be innovative without losing its roots. It’s a place where knowledge is protected, culture is celebrated, and the future is invited in, quietly, confidently, and beautifully.
