Out-of-Sequence
Logic Links
Primavera P6

Total Float and Free Float

Total Float and Free Float

09/08/2024

Total float refers to the amount of time that a project activity can be delayed without delaying the project's overall completion date. It is a measure of flexibility in the scheduling of tasks.

Key Points:

Calculation: Total float is calculated as the difference between the late start date and the early start date of an activity, or between the late finish date and the early finish date. Mathematically:

Total Float = Late Finish − Early Finish
Total Float = Late Finish − Early Finish

Types: There are two types of float:

Total Float:
Refers to the entire project duration and shows how long an activity can be delayed before affecting the project completion.

Free Float:
Refers to how long an activity can be delayed without affecting the early start of subsequent activities.

Impact on Scheduling:
Activities with zero total float are on the critical path, meaning any delay in these activities will directly impact the project completion date.

Activities with non-zero total float offer some leeway in scheduling without impacting the project's end date.

If total float is reduced, it may indicate that the project is becoming more constrained and may need re-evaluation of resources, scheduling, or task priorities.

Practical thinking involves focusing on effective, realistic solutions and actions based on real-world considerations. It emphasizes using logical reasoning to solve problems and make decisions that work in practical situations. This approach typically involves:

1. Analyzing the situation:
Understanding the context and specifics of the
problem.
2. Considering feasible solutions:
Evaluating options based on practicality and
available resources.
3. Prioritizing efficiency:
Choosing solutions that offer the best balance
between effort and benefit.
4. Implementing actions:
Taking concrete steps based on the chosen
solution.
5. Evaluating results:
Reviewing the outcomes to ensure the solution
works as intended and making adjustments if
needed.

Practical thinking helps in achieving effective results by focusing on what works in real-world scenarios rather than relying solely on theoretical or ideal solutions.

A risk register is a tool used in project management and organizational risk management to identify, assess, and prioritize risks.
It includes details about each risk, such as:

1. Risk Description:
What the risk is.

2. Risk Likelihood:
The probability of the risk occurring.

3. Impact:
The potential consequences if the risk occurs.

4. Risk Owner:
The person responsible for managing the risk.

5. Mitigation Strategies:
Actions to reduce or manage the risk.

6. Status:
Current state of the risk (e.g., active, resolved).

It helps teams monitor and manage risks effectively throughout a project or organizational process.

Earned Value Management (EVM) is a project management technique used to assess a project's performance and progress. It integrates project scope, cost, and schedule to provide accurate forecasts of project performance. Here are some key concepts:

Planned Value (PV): The value of the work that was planned to be completed by a certain time.

Earned Value (EV): The value of the work that has actually been completed by a certain time.

Actual Cost (AC): The actual cost incurred for the work performed by a certain time.

Cost Performance Index (CPI): Measures cost efficiency. It is calculated as EV divided by AC (CPI = EV / AC).

Schedule Performance Index (SPI): Measures schedule efficiency. It is calculated as EV divided by PV (SPI = EV / PV).

Cost Variance (CV): Measures cost performance. It is calculated as EV minus AC (CV = EV - AC).

Schedule Variance (SV): Measures schedule performance. It is calculated as EV minus PV (SV = EV - PV).

EVM helps project managers identify and address potential issues early, making it easier to control project costs and schedules.
