Operational performance starts with visibility.

Modern bulk terminals generate vast amounts of operational data every day. The challenge is not collecting the data; it is turning it into actionable insights.

With Siwertell Smartview, operators gain real-time access to machine performance, operational trends, and critical equipment status through an intuitive digital platform. This enables faster decision-making, improved planning, and more proactive maintenance strategies.

By transforming data into knowledge, terminals can increase availability, improve efficiency, and support long-term operational excellence.

Digitalization is not a future ambition. It is already delivering measurable value today.

We are proud to announce that Bruks Siwertell has received the 2026 JCE Sustainability & Innovation Award for the development of the Siwertell Edge ship unloader concept. 🏆

The award recognizes the outstanding work of our Design and Calculation team at Port Technology in developing a next-generation mechanical ship unloader for grain-handling applications.

Siwertell Edge combines operational performance, sustainability, and commercial competitiveness through a lightweight and standardized design with high unloading efficiency and reliability.

Special recognition goes to Zoltan Habony and Kristoffer Enggren, whose innovative thinking laid the foundation for the concept, as well as to all teams involved in bringing the project to life.

“This award reflects the strong engineering competence, innovation capability, and teamwork that exist throughout our organization,” says Malin Pekberg, Marketing Manager.

Why pneumatics win – and where they fail

Pneumatic unloaders have become increasingly popular in the grain market. The reasons are understandable.

Lower initial investment, easier integration into existing terminals and smaller structural footprints often make pneumatic solutions attractive in the early stages of a project.

At the same time, operational performance over the long term tells a broader story.

Pneumatic systems typically require higher energy consumption per tonne, offer more limited digging capability and can experience performance variations depending on cargo conditions.

Mechanical unloaders, by comparison, deliver stronger digging forces, higher energy efficiency and more stable unloading performance throughout the operation.

For terminal operators, the real challenge is not only evaluating the initial investment — but balancing CAPEX with long-term operational efficiency, reliability and total lifecycle performance.

This is where the latest generation of mechanical unloading solutions is changing the equation.

One Machine. Double Capacity.

What if redundancy did not mean duplicating infrastructure?

The Siwertell EDGE ship unloader concept introduces a different approach to terminal resilience and operational flexibility.

Instead of relying on two identical unloaders, where the loss of one machine immediately reduces total terminal capacity by 50%, the Siwertell EDGE concept introduces a more resilient approach.

A single unloader operates efficiently at 600 t/h during normal operation, while retaining the capability to ramp up capacity to 1200 t/h whenever operational demands require it.

This means terminals can maintain operational performance even if another machine becomes unavailable. The result is a smarter balance between redundancy, flexibility, operational continuity, and investment efficiency.

✅ One machine.
✅ Double capacity.
✅ No compromise on reliability

Overcoming the toughest challenges in salt handling

Handling salt is far from straightforward. Its corrosive nature and tendency to compact in vessel holds place extreme demands on unloading equipment – often beyond the capabilities of conventional solutions.

This customer case highlights how Siwertell ship unloaders deliver the performance required to meet these challenges.
With continuous screw technology and optimized inlet feeder design, the solution ensures:

– Reliable discharge of highly compacted cargo
– Resistance to corrosion in demanding environments
– Consistent, high-capacity performance
– Fully enclosed, dust-free operations

Unlike alternative technologies, Siwertell unloaders maintain steady conveying velocity and high through-ship efficiency, even under the most demanding salthandling conditions.

The result is a robust, future-proof solution that secures critical supply chains and minimizes operational risk for operators handling one of the industry’s most challenging bulk materials.

Installing two unloaders is not redundant. It’s a compromise.

For decades, grain terminals have approached redundancy in the same way: Two machines. Same capacity.

On paper, it sounds safe. It isn’t. If one machine goes down, you instantly lose 50% of your unloading capacity.

That means:

-Longer vessel turnaround times

- Increased risk of queues

- Reduced terminal efficiency

So, the question is: Is that really redundancy? Or just risk, split across two machines?

True redundancy should mean one thing:

Maintaining full operational capacity – even when something fails.
That requires a different approach. And a different type of solution.

How do you define redundancy in your operation?
