GAIA BioMaterials AB

GREENPEACE: RECYCLING MAKES PLASTICS MORE TOXIC

A recently published Greenpeace report claims that recycling increases the toxicity of recycled plastic. According to the report, which draws its conclusions from several different reports and research articles, most plastics contain toxic chemicals from the start, to begin with, but by recycling them, further toxic chemicals can be added due to contamination in the plastic waste stream and the recycling process itself.

NET VALUE; HOW GAIA IS WORKING ON SAVING THE OCEANS, ONE FISHING NET AT THE TIME

One of GAIA’s most exciting R&D projects is the development of biodegradable fishing nets. Fishing nets rank among the most prioritized applications to find a sustainable solution for, with an estimated 640000 tons of fishing gear lost or dumped in the oceans annually, with “ghost fishing” causing tremendous harm to marine life.

Together with its partners in the Catchgreen project, GAIA is determined to find a solution that will safeguard marine life while still allowing fishermen to continue their trade. The ambition is to present a commercially viable offer by 2025.

A new paper from Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) debunks the widely held view that biobased materials compete with food supplies for cultivatable land.

According to the paper, which cites 2023 information from the World Food Programme, The main causes for food shortages are:

- Climate change
- Conflict
- Extreme inequalities in wealth distribution
- Heavy dependence on food imports from industrial countries
- Overconsumption of meat
- Losses along the value chain
- The impact of the COVID pandemic

Notably, biomaterials and biochemicals are not included in these causes.

In this number of the GAIA Gazette: We dive deeper (yes, pun intended) into GAIA's efforts to save the oceans with R&D Manager Konrad Rosén, who offers a sneak peek into the fight against ghost fishing. We also look at Greenpeace's latest report, in which they thoroughly discredit plastics recycling on account of it making plastics even more toxic. Finally, keeping with the maritime theme in the first article, we share the latest reporting on microplastics in our oceans. - https://mailchi.mp/995bd43457b3/in-this-number-of-the-gaia-gazette -

As part of the Catchgreen project, GAIA is proud to announce the launch of the project's website.

Catchgreen is a multinational cross-sector collaborative research project that covers the entire fishing gear production chain, with a mission to eliminate ghost fishing and microplastics resulting from today's fishing nets.

Read more about the Catchgreen project - why replacing the current fishing nets made of non-biodegradable plastics is so important - and the project partners on the website.

Catchgreen is under a funding contract with the FCDO and UKaid through the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution programme.

News update from the SISTERS project, of which GAIA is proud to be a part.

This time it's from The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden, where Maja Lundell is doing her master's thesis on the extraction of valuable compounds from food loss as additives in food packaging applications, with the goal of reducing food waste through better packaging solutions.

Maja Lundell is a master student in the program of Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology at KTH University, she is doing her master thesis (30 ECTS, from January to June 2023) in Dr. Amparo J. Quero's group and co-supervised by the postdoc Dr. Pamela Freire. The project

The old truism of journalism, that "Never fact check a good story" still holds water.

As It turns out, last week's news about scrapping the Plastic Bag Tax in Sweden was somewhat exaggerated.

When the the budget was presented today, it only included a loosely held ambition to abolish - or at least significantly reduce - the tax under 2024.

From GAIA's point of view, our position can best be summarized with an English saying:

"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

Att plastpåseskatten skulle försvinna vid nyår visade sig vara lite för bra för att vara sant. Packnews har de senaste dagarna skrivit om detta. Men, något kommer att hända i höstbudgeten.
