CPTSCOPE-Team

CPTSCOPE-Team The Norwegian-German Cosmic Particle Telescope (CPT-SCOPE) instrument will explore the properties of sub-atomic particles aboard the BEXUS balloon in 2015.

The Cosmic Particle Telescope (CPT-SCOPE) instrument aims primarily to study the
altitude-dependent flux density of sub-atomic particles, namely electrons and protons
at energies of 1-25 MeV and 20-150 MeV, respectively. The instrument uses particle
telescope geometry, a shielded stack of semiconductor sensors and absorber layers,
and a radiation-hard application specific integrated circuit (ASIC)

for read-out. The
detector front-end electronics are realised using an ASIC-FPGA design which is
interfaced to memory and a microcontroller for external communications. We will use
multiple particle telescopes for the detection of electrons and protons. In this way the
particle environment in near space can be investigated. Furthermore, the particle
telescope geometry will be tested and optimised. In addition, the possible occurrence
of single event upsets inside of the read-out ASIC are identified internally and logged. This data helps to characterise function and radiation hardness of the ASIC. The rate
of single event upsets may be compared to the measured particle rates by the
telescopes. We will be able to provide relevant flight heritage for the used ASIC and
therefore come closer towards the implementation of a compact radiation monitor
able to be placed aboard small satellites or cubesats. The CPT-SCOPE instrument is
proposed for the BEXUS student balloon mission in 2015.

EN: Last week our team delivered the final version of our Student Experiment Documentation (SED-document) to ESA. You can find the full version of the document, and a general description of our project published on the link below.
This delivery marks the official end of our BEXUS cycle. It has been a great experience for the CPT-SCOPE team. More publications about our final results and future are coming soon.

EN: Last week the CPT-SCOPE participated in the Futurescapes symposium for new media, technology and the humanities.
Here we encouraged all students to engage more in student programs like REXUS/BEXUS by sharing some of our own experiences through the CPT-SCOPE project.
We wish to thank the organisers and partners of Futurescapes for a great event!

NO: Sist uke deltok CPT-SCOPE på Futurescapes symposium for new media, technology and the humanities.

En: Early this week Timo won the NIFRO prize 2016 for his master thesis! Part of his master was tied to his work on the CPT-SCOPE project through his work at IDEAS in Oslo. The NIFRO prize is awarded every year for the best masters thesis related to space research and technology. We congratulate Timo, and wish him all the best for his future work at IDEAS!

NO: Tidlig denne uken vant Timo årets NIFRO-pris for sin masteroppgave!

En: Yesterday the norwegian netnewspaper on popular science and technology www.forskning.no postet an article on the CPT-SCOPE. The article containes an interview with Timo in which he shares some of our experiences from our work and launch campaign. The article is a good read for anyone interested but beware it is written in Norwegian.

A successful flight campaign comes to an end. The following weeks will be analysis of all the data we got and presentations of our results.
That`s why we would like to thank all our sponsors who made our participation in the BEXUS 20 campaign possible!

Especially IDEAS (Integrated Detector Electronics AS) our main project sponsor who supported us throughout the whole mission and all our financial supporters! (Check them out at our Homepage: http://www.cpt-scope.com/node/13)

Thank you all for making our success possible!

A few minutes ago the recovery team finally returned with the BEXUS 20 and 21 gondola. It seems like the impact was pretty harsh and this gondola will not be flying ever again... Some stabilization straps ripped into pieces and the whole cage is bent.

But on the positive side first inspections found CPT-Scope mostly intact and first data analysis show pretty good results which got logged for a total of 25 hours. Further inspection will now show if any internal electronics got damaged by that heavy impact...

After cutdown we just lost connection to the gondola a few hundred meters above a forest in Lapland. All our data is securely saved and looks pretty promising.

Here you will find the whole GPS flight track of our experiment in the BEXUS 20 gondola. (http://1drv.ms/1R3TLUy)

Now it is time to stop working and start celebrating our successful flight!

Floating altitude of about 28km reached.
As a bonus we got to take pictures of the balloon from our groundstation about 100km away. If you look hard enough you can even see the gondola with our experiment in it.
