🏆 Kiruna Wagon's award-winning Helix Dumper unloads at a rate of 25,000 tonnes per hour.

🚆 Designed for a 30-tonne axle load, each wagon holds approximately 98 tonnes and takes about 14 seconds to unload. When running in unbroken train sets, this gives a discharge rate of 25,000 tonnes per hour—a level of productivity that is unprecedented in the unloading of ore concentrates and other fine-grained and potentially sticky commodities.

⚙️ There is no existing technology that can match the productivity of the Helix Dumper system when it comes to unloading heavy fine-grained bulk goods at a high discharge rate.

🔹 Bottom dump systems operate at a fast rate but can't handle sticky materials.
🔹 Rotary car dumpers are slower and more expensive compared to the rolling discharge solution of the Helix Dumper.
🔹 To match the productivity of the Helix Dumper, you would need at least four rotary car dumpers, resulting in tremendous costs for both technology and ground works.

💡 The Helix Dumper unloading station is as simple as it looks, and combined with the low-maintenance wagons, the system offers an outstanding solution from both an OPEX- and CAPEX- perspective.

For many mining operations, summer is a key period for maximizing production and maintaining efficient logistics. Reliable rail transport plays a crucial role in keeping material flowing safely and without interruption.

Kiruna Wagon's Side Dumper is engineered for the sealed transport of high-value and potentially hazardous ore products, combining operational flexibility with high productivity.

Why operators choose the Side Dumper:

🔹 Sealed roof system that remains closed throughout unloading, reducing dust emissions and preventing material loss.
🔹 Left- and right-side discharge for greater flexibility at unloading sites.
🔹 Unloading capacity of up to 1,500 tonnes per hour per station, with multiple stations enabling even higher throughput.
🔹 Integrated vibration system that improves the discharge of sticky materials.
🔹 Lightweight, robust construction designed for speeds of up to 100 km/h when fully loaded.
🔹 Easy maintenance thanks to replaceable wear components and a service-friendly bogie design.

Together with a simple and cost-efficient unloading station, the Side Dumper helps mining companies maximize wagon utilization, reduce turnaround times, and keep operations running efficiently throughout the peak production season.

💡 Engineered for reliable performance—when productivity matters most.

Kiruna Wagon Strengthens Critical Infrastructure Logistics with a New Specialised Wagon for Record-Heavy Transport

Kiruna Wagon, the leading manufacturer of railway transport solutions for the mining industry in the Nordic region, has signed an agreement with Kraftdragarna in Västerås for the delivery of a new purpose-built railway wagon with a payload capacity of up to 490 tonnes.

The project marks an important step in meeting the growing demand for advanced and critical infrastructure transport.

Purpose-built for critical infrastructure

The new wagon has been specifically designed to transport exceptionally heavy components, including power transformers and other critical equipment for the energy sector. Its design has been adapted to Swedish railway conditions, with a strong focus on robust operation, efficient loading and high operational availability.

"A key driver for us is developing straightforward solutions to complex challenges, and that's exactly what we're doing with this new wagon. We enjoy projects that are large, heavy and technically demanding," says Anders Vikard, Technical Director at Kiruna Wagon.

Kiruna Wagon builds on more than 120 years of engineering expertise, developing solutions for some of Europe's heaviest, longest, most efficient and most reliable railway freight operations. The company operates within one of the world's most sustainable transport sectors, and, according to Kiruna Wagon, it is difficult to find a more environmentally efficient solution than rail for transporting heavy loads.

Engineered for Arctic conditions

"We operate in the heart of Sweden's mining region and build our wagons using one of the world's purest iron ores – high-quality magnetite mined in Kiruna. Because we work in a harsh Arctic climate, we use components and engineer wagons capable of withstanding extremely demanding weather conditions," says Anders Vikard.

Kiruna Wagon has extensive experience transporting iron ore pellets on Sweden's busiest heavy-haul railway. That experience has been fundamental to the development of the new wagon, which combines high payload capacity with robust performance and efficient handling throughout the entire transport chain.

Advancing record-heavy rail transport

"For truly heavy and complex transports, railroad transport is often the most robust and efficient solution. With its high payload capacity and axle loads, rail will play an increasingly important role in the future. Demand for wagons capable of handling record-heavy transports is growing, driven both by industry and by the need for resilient infrastructure in a rapidly changing world," says Anders Vikard.

The specialised wagon will be delivered to Kraftdragarna in August 2028.

"Together with the existing wagon, which is almost 50 years old, this will become Sweden's largest railway wagon. Our extensive railway expertise, combined with Kraftdragarna's long experience in carrying out complex heavy transport operations, creates a very strong partnership. This is a technically demanding project that allows us to further strengthen our position in the field of record-heavy rail transport," concludes Anders Vikard.

When every ton counts, reliable performance matters.

Kiruna Wagon’s bottom dumper doors are engineered for high operational reliability, efficient unloading, and minimal maintenance — even in the harshest environments. Robust construction, smart mechanics, and dependable functionality make the difference where operations can never stop.

We continuously work on how wear parts and serviceability can be further developed and optimized. Bottom doors are exposed to extreme loads, and the challenge is to create a design that is both robust and lightweight — with easily replaceable components for efficient maintenance and long service life.

Built for Nordic conditions. Tested for reality.

Why do we prefer automatic couplers without buffers?

At Kiruna Wagon, it’s all about reliability, efficiency, and higher performance in demanding environments. By using automatic couplers without traditional buffers, we create a stronger and more stable rail system — especially important for heavy haul transportation within the mining and industrial sectors.

The advantages are many:
✔️ Faster and safer wagon coupling
✔️ Reduced wear and lower maintenance needs
✔️ More stable train sets with improved force distribution
✔️ More efficient operations in harsh climates and environments
✔️ Increased safety for personnel through less manual handling

In northern Sweden, rail transport faces extreme conditions all year round. That’s why we develop solutions designed to withstand the toughest environments while contributing to a smarter and more sustainable transport system for the future.
