The Spuhr Picatinny Gen II features beautifully chamfered edges and delivers superb repeatability. Even under heavy, hard use, there’s far less chance of raised burrs forming!)

Sharp, edgy corners on a Picatinny rail are a disaster for repeatability.
Surface treatment (like anodizing) builds up the most on sharp edges and corners, causing dimensional inconsistencies over time.
That’s exactly why we always heavily chamfer our Pic rails.
A larger chamfer also reduces the risk of misuse, accidental bumps, or minor mistakes creating sharp, protruding burrs that ruin repeatability.
Plus, nobody enjoys gripping a sawblade!

More and more actions these days feature an integral Picatinny rail that’s split into two separate sections.
The reasoning is completely understandable: it makes top-loading much easier and saves a significant amount of weight.
That said, the design does come with some drawbacks. It severely limits your options for scope placement, and you may end up unable to use the optic you really want because the eye relief simply doesn’t line up properly.
So one purpose of this post is to remind you to be extra careful when choosing your scope and mounts for these split-rail actions.
At the same time, it’s one of the strongest arguments in favor of our chassis system. Ours is one of the very few on the market that offers ultra-fast Length of Pull (LOP) adjustment. In literally a split second, you can change your LOP — and with it, your eye relief.
This is a game-changer when you’ve chosen an action that already restricts where you can mount the scope. It also shines during different shooting sessions, where changes in clothing, body armor, shooting position, or even fatigue cause your head to shift forward or backward on the stock, pulling your eye out of the ideal eye relief.
On top of that, our LOP adjustment includes preset maximum and minimum stops. That means you don’t have to watch the dial or count clicks — you can make quick, on-the-fly adjustments with total confidence and repeatability.

Picatinny Rails – How They (Should) Work!
First, here’s a straightforward drawing of a true Picatinny rail. It clearly shows the two key dimensions:
• 10 mm (0.400”) between the slots (center-to-center), and
• 5.23–5.42 mm slot width.
Despite these being the official MIL-STD-1913 specifications, you still find a surprising number of rails out there with all kinds of “creative” dimensions…
Here are some of the most common problems:
1. Ignoring the 10 mm spacing between recoil lugs
When this distance isn’t respected, many mounts either use multiple recoil lugs or try to engage the slots with half-screws / threaded features. Neither works properly when the standard isn’t followed.
2. Ejection port cutouts or split/dual Picatinny sections for scope mounting
This is a frequent mistake. It severely limits where you can place your scope and often makes it impossible to achieve proper eye relief with your preferred optic.
One of the biggest advantages of Picatinny is exactly its modularity – different optics need different forward/aft positions to give correct eye relief.
3. Slot width outside the 5.23–5.42 mm range
If the slots are too narrow or too wide, a large number of standard mounts simply won’t fit the rail at all.
4. Large lightening cuts running through the middle of the rail
These can work okay with some mounts, but many mounts have a very narrow recoil lug. A big cut in the middle means the lug gets no purchase and the mount becomes unstable or won’t clamp down properly.
Bottom line
When choosing a Picatinny rail, go for quality:
• No unnecessary interruptions or cutouts
• True adherence to the MIL-STD-1913 standard
• A rail that doesn’t just “look kinda like Picatinny” – it should actually be Picatinny.
That way your mounts will fit, stay secure, and give you the flexibility the system was designed for.
