Can indoor energy harvesting change the way we design and power smart buildings?

At The Things Conference 2026, our Pierre Harrysson joined Daanish Sadique from Pressac Communications to discuss how indoor energy harvesting is enabling a new generation of wireless sensors.

From CO₂ monitoring in classrooms to industrial applications, the conversation explores where light energy harvesting makes sense today, how it complements existing power solutions, and what it means for the future of maintenance-free IoT.

We’ve reinvented what connected devices can do. What happens when we rethink how they’re powered?

At The Things Conference, Pierre Harrysson explored this question in his keynote, “From Power Source to Possibility.” Capturing energy from the indoor light already around us opens up opportunities to:

• Rethink product design with greater freedom in form and integration.
• Reduce maintenance needs and costs over the product’s lifetime.
• Enable new applications that conventional power sources may limit.

Advances in indoor photovoltaics, ultra-low-power electronics, energy storage and power management are making these possibilities commercially viable.

The next possibility starts with a new idea. What could you build with indoor light?

Replacing one battery is a small task. Replacing thousands is an operational challenge.

Electronic shelf labels automate price updates across entire stores. But when their batteries run out, someone still needs to replace them by hand. Across thousands of devices, that means recurring service costs, more battery waste, and time spent on maintenance.

If the purpose is to remove manual work, how much manual maintenance should the power supply require?

Our latest article explores this challenge across IoT fleets and and how light energy harvesting can change this.

Not every attempt succeeds. But some failures shape what comes next.

Before Epishine, there was an earlier attempt to turn promising research into something commercial. It never took off, but the lessons from it would help shape a very different approach.

Every product starts with its purpose.
A computer mouse should fit naturally in your hand. A remote should feel intuitive to use. A sensor should disappear into its surroundings. Yet many products still end up being designed around their power source rather than the user.
Somewhere inside an otherwise carefully engineered product sits a battery compartment or a power connection. The design adapts around it with added thickness, removable covers, or cable routing. For decades, these compromises have simply been accepted as part of product design.
But what if the power source is adapted to the product instead?

Test an indoor solar cell under different laboratory setups and the reported performance can differ by up to 60%.

Not because the cell changed, but because differences in light sources, test setups and measurement procedures can significantly affect the results. A new Consensus Statement published in Nature Energy, building on IEC TS 62607-7-2, sets shared reference conditions for indoor photovoltaics and proposes best practices for evaluating performance and establishing baseline stability tests.

This is an important step for the indoor photovoltaics industry. Our R&D Director and co-founder Thomas Österberg previously helped call for greater alignment on measurement standards in a Joule paper, Reaching a consensus on indoor photovoltaics testing, This builds on IEC TS 62607-7-2 for indoor PV measurements.

For us at Epishine, shared measurement practices mean greater transparency, more meaningful comparisons and better decisions for anyone integrating light energy harvesting into their products.

Last week, the Epishine team went on a getaway to reflect on the journey we've been on together. As we celebrate 10 years, we looked back at what we've achieved, but even more importantly, at the failures and lessons that have shaped us. Those experiences are what we'll carry with us into the next chapter.

One thing became especially clear: everything we've built started with our people. Our technology is the result of a decade of hands-on work, curiosity, and persistence from an exceptional team and individuals. 💜

The real value we've created isn't found in a single breakthrough, but in the thousands of small decisions, improvements, and lessons that have turned great ideas into products that perform reliably for years.
