Why Sustainable Chemicals Matter

Chemicals are the building blocks of modern life. Around 96% of all manufactured products, from clothes and furniture to medicine, electronics, and cars, rely on chemical products. With the right design, chemicals can unlock new capabilities in materials and drive innovation across industries.

But as the world pushes toward climate neutrality, the chemical sector faces a major challenge: most raw materials still come from fossil sources like oil, gas, and coal. This creates substantial emissions throughout the value chain, not only from production but also from the raw materials used and how products are treated at end-of-life.

Carbon will remain the foundation of most chemicals but where that carbon comes from must change. Unlike sectors that can decarbonize through electrification, chemistry needs to re-carbonize using biogenic and recycled sources.

Today’s market regulations pull sustainable carbon away from chemicals and materials slowing down the . Most of it is diverted into fuels and energy, slowing down progress toward a truly circular carbon cycle. To reach global climate goals, sustainable chemicals must play a central role. The chemical industry will be crucial in enabling industries to innovate while reducing environmental impact.

By making sustainable carbon accessible on competitive terms, the chemicals sector can accelerate innovation and contribute meaningfully to climate neutrality. RE-Carbonizing chemicals: A key to a sustainable chemical industry

From the medicines we rely on to the smartphone in our pocket, most products depend on chemicals made out of carbon atoms. Today, almost all that carbon comes from virgin fossil sources and ends up in the atmosphere after use.

The challenge? Sustainable carbon is scarce, and there are no demand drivers for sustainable chemicals.

A strong regulatory framework for RE-carbonization should:
- Cut climate emissions
- Drive innovation and growth
- Strengthen Europe’s competitiveness
- Reduce dependency on fossil raw materials

But the key is boosting demand for sustainable products—because market signals drive change all the way up the value chain to chemicals and raw materials. Underlining health and safety as a top priority at Perstorp and the other companies in the PCG Specialty Chemicals division, November 3-7 was dedicated to promoting a mature safety culture with zero incidents and a healthy work life.

This year's theme, "Take Two Minutes for Health and Safety", guided the efforts to strengthen risk awareness by encouraging everyone to pause and assess hazards before beginning work. Health, Safety and Care Week offered a valuable chance for all team members to unite and prioritize what’s most important – The health and safety of everyone at our workplace.

The week included diverse activities and workshops to promote health, safety, and care, with options for colleagues to join locally or digitally. Highlights included online mindfulness sessions, lectures on balance and focus, and desk exercises to stay active at work.

Thank you to everyone who contributed and took part in this year's activities. Together, we make our workplace safer, healthier and more caring - every day.

Meet our Business Manager, Elin Nilsson!

Elin is Business Manager in the Oxo and Plasticizer team, part of Commercial and Innovation. She stepped in to her current role in the summer of 2023 after returning from a 3-year expat assignment in the Netherlands. Her journey at Perstorp started in 2017 as a process engineer, and this is now her third role within the company. Elin is globally responsible for five products in the Oxo portfolio, with responsibilities including price setting, overseeing forecasting, and developing sales strategies for the products.

“The best thing about working at Perstorp, and something most of my colleagues would agree with, is the people. There's a strong culture of trust and support, which has been key to my rapid development within the company. I've had managers and colleagues who believed in me, allowing me to grow quickly. Despite my lack of formal business experience, I had a lot of support from my manager when the opportunity of my current role presented itself”, Elin concludes.

“Think about a life without plastics – it’s impossible. Now, the ambition is to make sure to incorporate plastics into a circular system that meets our customers’ sustainability and efficiency needs. To begin with, plastics is a resource efficient solution compared to many other material options and so we should avoid it ending up as ‘just’ waste,” says Linda Zellner, Director Application Development – Advanced Polymer Solutions.

Innovation plays a pivotal role in advancing sustainable practices across industries. At Perstorp, we actively engage in research and development (R&D) collaborations with academia, subject matter experts, research institutes, and other partners in order to create more sustainable solutions for the future
