Have you ever had an instrument out of service in your lab for several days or even weeks?

Then you know what that means: having to perform operations manually again and, most likely, delays in the analyses.

The Dilugent® Shaker and Dilushaker normally work very well, and it's very rare for these instruments to break down.

In fact, it's fascinating to meet some customers who have been using the same Dilushaker for 20 years.

But like all instruments, a problem can sometimes arise, and in that case, we intervene immediately.
Our specialized technical service team repairs the shakers as quickly as possible. Of course, if it's necessary to keep the shaker in the workshop for a few days, we always make sure that a replacement instrument is available in the lab in the meantime.

In the middle of a long series of dilutions, he stared at the row of test tubes and thought:
"Was this the 10⁻⁴ or the 10⁻⁵?
Had I already mixed it?"

He compared the tubes, and they both seemed to have the same volume.
He looked at the 10⁻⁶ tube, and it appeared to have 1 mL less.
Then he quickly checked the 10⁻³ tube and saw that it seemed to have 2 mL less than the 10⁻⁴ and 10⁻⁵ tubes.

He sighed.

He went to the refrigerator and got two more fresh tubes to continue again from the 10⁻³ dilution…

Wasted time, wasted tubes and an unnecessary increase in stress.

A customer of mine, a lab manager at a dairy company,
told me about something that happened to her last Friday.

She said that around 16.30,
just as she was getting ready to go home,
she noticed that the new lab technician seemed very upset.

The technician was holding
a rack of dilution tubes in one hand and
a 1 L bottle of solution in the other,
which the manager assumed was a diluent for refilling some tubes.

She asked her how her first week had gone
and if she was happy with them.

At that moment, the technician started crying and said:
"It's something so simple,
and I've done it so badly.
I've been doing dilutions every day this week
and they've been going well,
but today, in the rush to finish before the weekend,
I got distracted and mixed up the tubes.
It's been an exhausting week."

My customer told me that she understood her immediately.
A few years ago, it was her the one who stayed ridiculously late
to finish the serial dilutions.
So, she reassured the technician, saying:
“Don’t worry, it’s okay.
We’ve all made mistakes with those darn serial dilutions.
Even though it’s a simple and basic microbiology technique,
it only takes a moment of distraction
for everything to go wrong.”

Then she had an idea
and asked the technician to wait a moment.
She went to another lab,
in a different department of the same building,
and grabbed a blister pack of Dilucup® Elegance
and the Dilugent® Shaker.

When she returned, she said:
“Look, with this you’ll be able to finish the remaining serial dilutions in no time.
Just open the Dilucups you need
and press the pedal to start shaking.”

According to my customer, the technician’s reaction was immediate:

The manager stayed until the technician finished
so she could close the lab,
and in about 10 minutes she was done
and ready to go home.

As she left, she smiled and said:

we're keeping it!"

My customer told me she went home feeling great

If you work with microbial enumeration in the lab, this is for you.

In this short video, we show you a standardized way to enumerate microorganisms from a food sample using Dilucup®:

1. Homogenize your solid sample with a diluent (e.g. MRD – Maximum Recovery Diluent) to obtain a 1:10 dilution.
2. Transfer 1 mL of the homogenate into the first flashing Dilucup®.
3. Wave your hand in front of the sensor to start the agitation.
4. Transfer 1 mL from the used Dilucup® to the next cup and activate the sensor again.
5. Repeat until you reach the required dilution.
6. Plate 1 mL and incubate.
7. When you need to dilute a new sample, simply open new Dilucups and start again.

Wondering why you got an unexpected enumeration?

Tracing your dilutions may help you get the answer.

Here’s a simple habit:

✔️ Before you dilute each sample, scan its label.

This gives you a clear record of the exact order in which all samples were processed. If a result is unexpected, you can easily trace where things went wrong.

To verify the samples order, you can export how the dilutions were performed from the Dilugent® Shaker via USB and review it alongside your results.

⏱️ A few seconds of scanning can save you a lot of time (and frustration) during analysis.

Dilugent® Shaker is currently the only instrument that lets you fully trace your dilutions.
