The long-term goal with the research conducted by our team is to identify disease pathways which can be disrupted either at an early point in order to prevent disease or at a later point to halt or alleviate already manifest neurodegeneration caused by various disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies.

Another great addition to the Nielsen Lab - Teegan has joined!

My name is Teegan Gonyea, and I am excited to start interning in Dr. Nielsen's lab this semester. I am an exchange student from the United States, where I study Biochemistry at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. My research will center around how liver-secreted molecules affect the Blood-Brain-Barrier. I look forward to the upcoming semester and am thrilled to be working in the lab!

A warm welcome to the lab, Teegan! We’re so excited to have you with us! 🥳

This week, part of the Nielsen team is attending the meeting in Copenhagen. We are learning a lot and were also able to contribute with presentations of our findings relating to the liver and its potential relation to neurodegenerative diseases.

On Wednesday, the Nielsen lab attended “Latest news about Alzheimer's disease” at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, presented by Dr. Henrik Zetterberg. It’s important to stay up to date, and very exciting to see real progress in diagnosing and treating Alzheimer’s disease. 🧠✨

The anti amyloid antibody lecanemab (Leqembi) is now approved in countries all over the world for early Alzheimer’s, but it’s not yet implemented in Sweden’s healthcare system despite being developed from Swedish research. Partly due to unwanted side-effects, and sadly partly due to cost. Leqembi is also not advised for APOE4 homozygotes, the people most at risk for AD, which really fuels our fire to help find better, safer, and more widely accessible treatments, especially for those with APOE4-linked risk. 🧬💪

Why would Sweden Liver Week 2026 be of interest to scientists in the Neurodegeneration field? Well well, the Nielsen team has for several years now nurtured a growing interest in peripheral processes, mainly in the liver, and how these relate to the brain. Talks on auxiliary liver transplantation as well as donor-specific antibodies broaden our perspective on how hepatic APOE may be of relevance to brain function!

The Nielsen Lab continues to grow - Carmen is here:

My name is Carmen Campos, and I will be doing an internship in Dr. Nielsen's lab during the spring semester. I am an Erasmus student from Córdoba, Spain, and I study Biochemistry at my home university. My research will center on liver-related mechanisms that may play a role in the increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease associated with APOE4. I am really excited to learn more about this process and to contribute to this research!

Welcome to the lab, Carmen - So excited to have you here! 🥳

This morning, the Nielsen lab started the day with an inspiring seminar from BioArctic, highlighting the latest developments in the BrainTransporter™ technology. The seminar covered how this approach uses receptor-mediated transport to facilitate antibodies and other modalities across the blood–brain barrier, with the potential to enhance treatment efficacy. Keeping up with the rapid advances in antibody therapies for Alzheimer’s disease is essential, and it will be exciting to follow how this technology may influence the future of amyloid-antibody treatments! 💡🙏

The year is coming to an end, and the Nielsen lab has had a very merry December so far, with a lovely Christmas dinner and an inspiring lecture from this year’s Nobel Prize laureate in Physiology or Medicine, Fred Ramsdell. Now it’s time to change the sparkling lights in the microscope to the sparkling lights on the Christmas tree. 🎄🔬 We wish you all happy holidays and a wonderful new year! We’re already looking forward to 2026!

PhD student Maja just held her first neurochemistry seminar at the department of biochemistry and biophysics at Stockholm University, which also happened to be the final seminar of the year for the department. A great way to start wrapping up 2025 with interesting questions, inspiring discussions, and plenty of motivation for the work ahead. We're feeling grateful and excited for what’s coming next!

27/11/2025

Happy to share that the first PhD checkpoint for PhD student Maja Sjödahl in the lab has been successfully completed, marking an encouraging milestone in her PhD project. The work is moving forward with great momentum, and exciting things ahead include an oral presentation for the AD/PD 2026 Conference in Copenhagen, March 20th 8:40— a fantastic opportunity to present our findings on an international stage. Hope to see you there!
