Eight years ago, SpinChem was a university spin-off with a bold idea. Last week, Emil Byström and Tove Näsman shared the story behind the journey: from saying yes to opportunities others might have passed on, to building the world's largest rotating bed reactor installation.

At Umeå Biotech Incubator's House Breakfast, they shared what it really takes to go from spin-off to scale-up: persistence, broad perspective over narrow focus, and strong quality discipline.

Thank you to Tomas Ruuth, Christin Grundström, and the entire UBI community for the warm welcome and great conversations.

In a world turning inward, Sweden is standing up for openness. The Swedish Government's "Made with Sweden" initiative prioritises genuine collaboration over simply exporting products.

SpinChem's expansion into India embodies this approach. Rather than just shipping technology, we are building a long-term presence together with a local partner, Smart Labtech, combining Swedish innovation with deep Indian market knowledge and networks that span more than two decades.

Chin-Boon Chng and team at National University of Singapore have developed an automated workcell integrating rotating bed reactor (RBR) technology for drug synthesis. This CPS-based approach addresses key bottlenecks in pharmaceutical development by enabling efficient solid-liquid phase reactions, reducing manual intervention, and supporting scalable production.

The system demonstrates how SpinChem RBR technology can streamline complex synthetic routes while maintaining reaction control.

The nuclear industry has to deal with highly contaminated liquids, stored in containers that are sometimes inaccessible or losing integrity as they age.

There are some buildings that may, at any moment, release radioactive wastewater to the environment if this water is not managed in time.

The rotating bed reactor can be introduced into virtually any liquid container to extract and immobilize the contamination in a solid waste form. This makes long-term storage much safer for future generations.

Producing bio-based chemicals at industrial volumes often stalls at the same point: catalyst stability drops as concentrations rise, increasing costs and waste per batch.

This research from University, Technische Universität Hamburg, Diduco, Sustainable Momentum SL, SpinChem and Leibniz Universität Hannover by Philipp Petermeier, Jan Philipp Bittnerr, Tobias jonsson, Pablo Domínguez de María, Emil Byström, and Selin Kara shows that a Rotating Bed Reactor achieves >95% product yield at high throughput while preserving catalyst integrity across cycles, reducing both raw material consumption and downtime.

7,000 L of water deionized in 2 hours using just 36.5 L of resin.

Traditional ion exchange columns suffer from channelling when poorly packed, causing liquid to bypass the resin. At industrial volumes, this leads to substantial inefficiencies and additional waste.

The rotating bed reactor is not affected by channelling, making it a resource-efficient alternative for ion removal at scale.
