A New Generation of Robots Can Help Small Manufacturers

Big companies? They’re already there, harnessing advanced technology and optimizing their output. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)? Not so much.

The digital evolution continues

Have the goals of industrial digitalisation changed? And what might the next be disruption be in the digitalisation journey?

While the initial wave of industrial digitalisation was primarily driven by the need for efficiency, productivity and cost reduction – with a focus on integrating systems, automating processes and optimising operations – as sustainability and environmental responsibility have become more urgent, the drivers for digitalisation are evolving in tandem.

This is confirmed by Stefanie Frank, Head of Strategy at Siemens Digital Industries, who said: “Today organisations are leveraging digital tools not just for operational excellence but also to achieve their environmental impact and carbon emission reduction targets. Advanced analytics, Industrial internet of Things (IIoT) sensors, and AI-driven insights are being used to monitor and reduce energy consumption, optimise resource usage and minimise waste.

Sensing the bigger picture - Why sensor technology is fundamental to manufacturing 4.0

We are in the midst of a fourth Industrial Revolution.

The first Industrial Revolution, which began in the late eighteenth century, mechanized production with steam power. The second, just a century later, introduced electricity and mass production. The third took place in the 1960s and 1970s and brought early automation and computing technology onto the factory floor.

Each of these events fundamentally changed the world and disrupted multiple industries and sectors. And each arguably pales in comparison to what’s currently taking place.
