dr Juliani Dewi provides us with her perspective on what she thinks Indonesia – the country that is the third largest contributor to global TB cases – needs to focus on as the country continues to confront the TB epidemic in this video.

While Indonesia has set a target of a 20% reduction in TB incidence by 2020, in reality, there was an increase of 8.5% in TB incidence in 2015 versus 2021. TB deaths continue to climb, with one person dying from TB every 4 minutes. (1)

Smoking continues to be one of the leading causes of TB infection in 2021. Those who are HIV+ are more likely to fall ill with TB; diabetes is another leading cause of TB infection in 2021. (1)

dr Juliani Dewi, SpPK is a clinical pathologist lab director with Rampal Diagnostika, Indonesia.

While TB incidence saw a 12% reduction in 2021 versus 2015(1), awareness of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) amongst the immunocompromised is still low. Among all the TB case notifications in Thailand, 84% of these cases are individuals with known HIV status.(2)

A/Prof. Jackrapong Bruminhent, MD, is with the Division of Infectious Diseases, Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand.
