Why Do Some LCD Backlights Need a Separate Power Supply?

One of the questions I occasionally receive from customers is:

"If the LCD is already connected through the FPC, why can the backlight not simply be powered from there?"

It is a fair question. After all, the FPC already carries the display signals and power, so why introduce another cable, another connector, and another power supply?

The answer lies in engineering rather than convenience.

A display and its backlight have very different power requirements.

The LCD controller, touch panel and display interface (MIPI, LVDS, RGB, etc.) typically consume relatively little current. However, the LED backlight is often the largest power consumer in the entire display assembly.

For example, a high-brightness industrial display may require:

Display logic: 100–300mA
Touch controller: less than 50mA
LED backlight: 500mA to over 3A, depending on brightness

Trying to deliver all of that current through a fine-pitch FPC is not always the best engineering solution.

Why use a separate backlight power supply?
1. Higher current capability
High-brightness displays can easily exceed the current that is practical for an FPC. A dedicated power input allows thicker wires, lower resistance and safer current handling.

2. Reduced voltage drop
Long FPC traces create resistance. As current increases, voltage drops become more significant, causing reduced brightness and inconsistent illumination.

A dedicated power source delivers a more stable voltage directly to the LEDs.

3. Lower heat generation
Higher current flowing through narrow copper traces generates additional heat.

Separating the backlight power keeps temperatures lower, improving both reliability and product lifetime.

4. Better EMC/EMI performance
LED drivers switch current at high frequencies.

Keeping this high-current path separate from sensitive display signals reduces electrical noise and improves signal integrity.

5. Easier brightness control
Many systems use dedicated LED driver ICs that provide:

PWM dimming
Analog dimming
Constant-current regulation
Open and short LED protection
Thermal protection

These drivers are usually located close to the main power source rather than inside the display FPC.

6. Greater design flexibility
Different customers have different brightness requirements.

Instead of redesigning the display, engineers can simply choose a different LED driver or power source while keeping the same LCD module.

This approach is particularly useful in medical, industrial and outdoor applications where brightness requirements vary significantly.

Why do consumer devices often use only the FPC?
Phones, tablets and laptops are designed as complete systems.

The display, LED driver, battery and power management IC are all designed together, allowing the backlight power to be integrated into the display connector.

Industrial equipment is different.

Many customers integrate displays into existing systems, each with different power rails, environmental conditions and brightness requirements. A dedicated backlight power supply provides engineers with greater flexibility and a more robust design.

Engineering is about choosing the right solution, not the simplest one.
Adding an extra connector may appear to create unnecessary complexity.

In reality, it is often the decision that improves electrical performance, thermal management, reliability and long-term serviceability.

The next time you see a display module with a separate backlight power input, remember that it is rarely a compromise.

More often, it is the result of thoughtful engineering.

KANOU - More Than Just a Touchscreen Supplier

One of the greatest values an engineering partner brings is helping customers interpret technical specifications correctly before design decisions are made.

Recently, during a custom touchscreen display project, a customer asked us about the backlight specification.

The datasheet stated:

VF = 30V (±2V) IF = 80mA (Typ.)

The customer wanted to confirm whether 80mA referred to each individual LED. Since the backlight contains 40 LEDs, the calculated total current would have been 3.2A, which would significantly influence the selection of the LED driver and power supply.

After reviewing the backlight architecture, we clarified that the LEDs were configured as 10 series × 4 parallel.

Forward current per LED: 20mA
Four parallel strings × 20mA
Actual backlight current: 80mA

The difference between 80mA and 3.2A is a factor of 40.

That single clarification can completely change:

• LED driver selection • Power supply sizing • PCB layout considerations • Thermal design • Component cost • Overall system design

This is why engineering support extends far beyond manufacturing.

A custom touchscreen display consists of hundreds of design decisions, including the LCD, backlight, touch sensor, cover glass, optical bonding, adhesives, firmware, interfaces, mechanical tolerances and environmental requirements.

Each decision affects the final product's performance, reliability and manufacturability.

The first step in choosing a custom display is not to focus only on price or size, but to understand the product itself. Where will the product be used? What content needs to be shown? Under what lighting conditions will users operate it? Does the device need to run for long periods of time? These questions will influence the choice of brightness, viewing angle, resolution, operating temperature, backlight lifetime, and overall reliability.

For example, an LCD display used in an indoor control panel may focus more on display clarity, power consumption, and cost balance. A display used in outdoor or strong-light environments may require higher brightness, wider viewing angles, and surface treatments such as anti-glare or anti-reflective coating. For industrial display projects, stability is often more important than a single specification. A good display effect is only the foundation; stable performance during long-term use is what the project truly needs.

Structural fit is another important factor that is often overlooked when selecting a custom display. Display size, outline dimensions, thickness, active area, FPC position, connector direction, and installation method can all affect the final product design. If these details are not confirmed in the early stage, problems such as cable conflict, limited housing space, mismatched openings, or assembly difficulty may appear later. Providing structural drawings, housing requirements, or prototype information at the beginning of the project can help the display supplier evaluate the feasibility of the solution more accurately.

The interface also needs to be confirmed early. Common display interfaces include RGB, LVDS, MIPI, SPI, and MCU. Different interfaces are suitable for different display sizes, resolutions, and main control platforms. If the interface is not properly matched, the debugging time and development cost may increase. A mature custom LCD display solution should consider not only display performance, but also mainboard compatibility, driver support, and mass production stability.

If the product requires touch operation, the touch display module also needs to be carefully selected. Capacitive touch is suitable for most modern control panels and smart terminals, offering a clean appearance and smooth operation experience. Resistive touch still has value in some industrial environments. Details such as cover glass material, thickness, silk printing color, opening position, anti-fingerprint treatment, and anti-glare surface can also affect the final appearance and user experience.

For buyers, choosing a custom display supplier should not be based only on price. It is more important to consider whether the supplier can understand the project requirements, provide practical suggestions in the early stage, support sample development, assist with structural matching, conduct testing and verification, and ensure stable batch delivery. A custom display project is not simply about buying a screen. It is about making the display solution truly fit the product.
