GG vs GFF Touchscreens: Which One Should You Choose?

When selecting a projected capacitive (PCAP) touchscreen for industrial, medical, commercial, or embedded applications, one of the most common questions is:

Should I choose GG or GFF touch technology?

While both technologies provide multi-touch capability and excellent user experience, their construction, durability, optical performance, and cost differ significantly.

Understanding the Structure
GG (Glass-Glass)

GG stands for Glass-Glass construction.

The touchscreen consists of:

Cover Glass
ITO Sensor Glass

In this design, the conductive ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) sensor is deposited directly onto a glass substrate.

GFF (Glass-Film-Film)

GFF stands for Glass-Film-Film construction.

The touchscreen consists of:

Cover Glass
ITO Film Layer
ITO Film Layer

Instead of glass, the touch sensor is created on PET film layers.

Key Differences
1. Durability

GG
✔ Superior mechanical strength

✔ Better scratch resistance

✔ More resistant to temperature and humidity variations

✔ Longer operational lifespan

GFF
✔ Suitable for standard environments

✖ Lower mechanical robustness

✖ Film layers may be more susceptible to environmental stress over time

For industrial, medical, transportation, and outdoor applications, GG is often the preferred choice.

2. Optical Performance

GG
✔ Better optical clarity

✔ Lower risk of warping

✔ Excellent compatibility with optical bonding

✔ Improved sunlight readability

GFF
✔ Good optical performance

✖ Slightly lower light transmission compared to GG

✖ More susceptible to dimensional changes under extreme conditions

When combined with optical bonding and anti-glare treatment, GG generally delivers the best viewing experience.

3. Cost

GG
Higher manufacturing cost due to glass-based sensor construction.

GFF
More cost-effective solution for high-volume applications.

For projects where budget is the primary concern, GFF can provide an attractive alternative.

4. Typical Applications
GG Touchscreens
Medical devices
Industrial HMI panels
Factory automation equipment
Outdoor kiosks
Transportation systems
High-end embedded displays
GFF Touchscreens
Consumer electronics
Smart home appliances
Commercial control panels
Cost-sensitive embedded products
Which Technology Is Better?

The answer depends on the application's priorities.

Choose GG when:

Reliability is critical
Optical bonding is required
Long product life is expected
Harsh environments are involved
Premium user experience is desired

Choose GFF when:

Cost optimization is important
The operating environment is less demanding
High-volume production is the priority
Final Thoughts

As display technologies continue to evolve, touchscreen performance is becoming increasingly important in industrial and embedded systems.

For applications requiring high durability, superior optical performance, and long-term reliability, GG remains the industry benchmark.

However, GFF continues to offer an excellent balance between performance and cost, making it a practical choice for many commercial applications.

The best solution is not always the most expensive one—it is the one that best matches your application's requirements.

What touchscreen structure are you currently specifying for your projects: GG or GFF?

Soda Lime 3.0mm Tempered Glass IK08 Drop Ball Test

The test sample for this experiment was Soda Lime 3.0mm tempered glass, with dimensions of 147.9 × 109.9 mm and a measured thickness of 3.076 mm.

Test Conditions
Steel ball weight: 509 g
Drop height: 1 m

Test Procedure
A 509 g steel ball was dropped from a height of 1 m onto the center of the glass for three consecutive impacts. The energy of a single impact is approximately 5 J, corresponding to the IK08 impact protection rating.

Test Results
The glass successfully passed the IK08 impact test.

Three Choices for Electronic Display Glass: An In-Depth Analysis of Green Glass, Ultra-Clear Glass, and High-Aluminosilicate Glass

In the field of electronic displays, glass cover panels are not only the basic protective layer of a screen, but also a core component that directly affects visual performance, touch experience, and the overall service life of a device. Whether used in smartphones, tablets, industrial control displays, or medical display equipment, the material of the glass cover directly determines the product’s user experience and durability level...

Before choosing an outdoor display, many people assume that simply increasing the screen brightness will solve sunlight readability issues.

The reality is, brightness alone is not enough.

Even the brightest display can become difficult to read when direct sunlight creates excessive glare and reflections. True outdoor readability requires a combination of technologies working together.

At KANOU, this is where our expertise makes the difference:

✅ Optimized Cover Glass Solutions

Anti-Glare (AG) treatment to reduce surface glare
Anti-Reflective (AR) coating to minimize reflections
Combination AG + AR solutions for demanding outdoor environments

✅ Advanced Optical Bonding The bonding method between the display and cover glass plays a critical role in improving contrast, reducing internal reflections, and enhancing overall visibility under sunlight.

✅ Durable Industrial Printing Outdoor applications require more than readability. Logos and decorative printing must withstand years of UV exposure and harsh environmental conditions. KANOU utilizes anti-UV inks with proven performance of 1,300 hours UV resistance testing, helping prevent fading and peeling over time.

Whether you're designing equipment for industrial, medical, transportation, marine, EV charging, kiosk, or outdoor HMI applications, successful sunlight readability is achieved through the right combination of:

☀️ Display Brightness

☀️ Cover Glass Technology

☀️ Optical Bonding

☀️ UV-Resistant Printing

At KANOU, we bring all these elements together as a one-stop solution provider for custom displays and touchscreens.

Are we still competitive if we need to source an off-the-shelf touchscreen from our competitor for the same customer?

In today’s competitive market, customers are not just looking for the lowest component cost — they are looking for reliability, integration, quality control, and a dependable supply chain.

Sometimes, we may even source an off-the-shelf touchscreen from another touchscreen maker to support the same end customer. Does that mean we are no longer competitive?

Not at all.

At KANOU, our strength goes far beyond supplying just a touchscreen module.

Most touchscreen suppliers focus only on delivering the module itself. What differentiates KANOU is our ability to provide complete value-added integration, including:

• Customized cover glass solutions
• Optical bonding and lamination processes
• In-house OEM and sub-assembly capabilities
• Integration of the touchscreen into the customer’s overall equipment
• Vertically integrated manufacturing support

Even when the touchscreen itself is externally sourced, KANOU still controls the critical processes that matter most to customers — quality, assembly consistency, and delivery ex*****on.

By managing every component and module under one integrated workflow, we provide:
✔ Better quality assurance
✔ More predictable delivery timelines
✔ Reduced coordination complexity for customers
✔ Stronger overall system reliability

In many projects, the lowest component cost is not the deciding factor. The real value comes from having a trusted partner who can manage the entire solution efficiently and consistently.

That is where KANOU has the upper hand.
