🔎 Cellular senescence was first observed in 1981 by Hayflick, who noted that pulmonary fibroblasts stopped replicating and eventually died after being passaged for over 8 months.

Further studies have found that cellular senescence can be triggered by a reduction in telomere length, as well as external factors like DNA damage, oxidative stress, and oncogene activation.

While the mechanisms behind senescence are not yet fully understood, it is known to be closely linked to cancer and age-related diseases, leading to extensive research on the topic.
