Against the backdrop of recent discussions on workforce restructuring, including cases where organisations have relocated functions overseas and invited employees to reapply for roles in other markets, important conversations have emerged around how workforce transitions are managed and communicated.

Commenting on broader workforce trends, IHRP Senior Professional Archana Srinivasan observed that organisations facing economic pressures, regionalisation efforts and technological change are increasingly undertaking restructuring or workforce calibration exercises. While many of these initiatives are driven by legitimate business considerations such as automation, operational efficiency or regional operating models, they can also result in changes to roles and workforce composition.

She noted that the terminology used to describe such exercises does not change the underlying impact when positions are no longer required. Where a role in Singapore becomes redundant as a result of restructuring or relocation, the situation may still be regarded as a retrenchment regardless of how the exercise is framed.

Ultimately, while restructuring decisions are often shaped by business needs, the way organisations engage and support their people throughout the process can leave a lasting impression. HR professionals play a pivotal role in shaping these experiences, guiding organisations to navigate change with empathy, transparency and integrity. Through thoughtful workforce practices and a people-centred approach, HR can help organisations build trust, strengthen resilience and create workplaces where employees continue to feel valued, even during periods of significant transformation.

Some employers take this approach in order to avoid the optics of a retrenchment, say manpower experts.

On 28 May, the IHRP Board gathered for our annual retreat and the conversations throughout the day were timely, energising, and inspiring.

Following a morning of Board updates, we opened our doors to our Master Professionals and tripartite partners for an exclusively curated Lunch & Learn. At its heart was a panel discussion on Reimagining Work: No Regret Pivots and Big Bets on AI, featuring voices who are living this transformation daily:
➑️ James Atkinson, VP, Thought Leadership, SHRM
➑️ Aileen Tan, IHRP Master Professional and Chief People and Sustainability Officer, Singtel Group
➑️ Rajeev Tummala, Head of Digital & Data for Asia, MENA, HSBC Securities Services
➑️ Soumee De, IHRP Senior Professional

Together, they explored what it takes to translate AI ambition into meaningful organisational outcomes; from aligning AI strategy with business goals, building the right data and capability foundations, to questions of ownership and putting in place governance and guardrails that enable trusted adoption.

One message rose above the rest: technology enables, human judgement defines. Our profession's enduring value lies in judgement, ethics, trust, and the ability to lead people through uncertainty and change.

As much as we looked outward, we also turned inward to brainstorm IHRP's direction for the next 3–5 years. In the afternoon breakout segment, we explored plausible futures for Singapore's workforce: from orchestrated, well-managed transitions where HR becomes the architect of transformation, to scenarios where AI adoption outpaces planning and trust erodes. Each future asks something different of us and each demands that IHRP shows up with clarity and confidence for our HR community.

The work continues and we are energised by the direction ahead.

To every board member, panellist, and facilitator who contributed: thank you. The best conversations don't just inform strategy; they sharpen conviction and deepen our commitment to the future of work.

We also thank P&G Singapore for hosting us and helping make this retreat a success!
