Global rice prices surged close to 12-year highs, no thanks to the potential impacts of El Niño on production.

What if growing rice in arid conditions became feasible?

Wouldn’t it be nice if our favourite hawker dishes like Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak and Lamb Biryani remained affordable and delicious?

Rice prices surged to their highest in almost 12 years, said the United Nations' food agency.

TLL was started in 2002 to become a research institution with a focus to understand and harness the power of life sciences, addressing anticipated challenges in food security, environmental sustainability and well-being - 21st century challenges that directly impact societal needs.

This was a time before green terms like “Sustainability” and “Nature-based solutions” became buzz words today.

Dr Shen Qing’s research focuses on how a fungal pathogen, causal agent of rice blast disease, initiates changes in metabolism and morphogenesis leading to regulated cell death, named Ferroptosis, that allows it to successfully enter and adapt to the host environment.

“This provides novel metabolic insights into how plant defence responses undergo changes in the face of detrimental biotic interactions in a changing environment,” she explains.

“I am excited to present unpublished data, which represent novel findings and a first look into how naturally occurring developmental cell death, also known as Ferroptosis, play a role in fungal pathogenesis,” adds Sheng Qing.

Dr Chen Cheng-Yen is a post-doctoral fellow exploring beneficial mycobiota-plant interactions, such as growth-promoting molecular mechanisms, at Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory.

“We are facing a transition in agriculture,” he says. “Our findings may change the way that agriculture evolve from traditional to sustainable practices.”

Looking into host-associated microbes in plant health and disease, Cheng-Yen’s research found that fungal agents provide nutrients to host plants and protect crops against pathogens, which can be used to improve knowledge of potential biofertilizers, and increase opportunities for future applications.

“This is my first time sharing my work with the public since I graduated,” adds Cheng-Yen. “I am glad to have the chance to introduce the power of fungi on plants to more people,” says the young scientist enthusiastically.

A Junior Research Fellow at TLL, Ms Mu Baicong currently focuses her research on the molecular mechanism of yeast cells adjusting to micro-environmental change.

Using the most basic mechanism of an ancient yeast cell, her findings could provide the theoretical foundation for the optimization of crop yield in the global warming era.

TLA: Tell us more about the cellular mechanisms during stress responses.
Baicong: The yeast cell actively maintains its plasma membrane integrity to accommodate a changing environment. This may apply to plants, as heat stress threatens the membrane integrity in plants.

TLA: What are you most excited about the symposium?
Baicong: We have quantitatively monitored the plasma membrane expansion during the hypoosmotic shock of the fission yeast spheroplasts. I look forward to sharing these findings and gathering audience feedback at the symposium.

Dr Chan Seow Neng’s presentation topic at the upcoming symposium introduces a new layer of gene autoregulation, which is important for host protein homeostasis.

“Not all introns are intermediates or junk sequences,” he begins. “sisRNAs, derived from introns, are stable RNA with molecular functions and are involved in autoregulatory pathway,” explains Seow Neng.

“I am looking forward to the exchange of ideas regarding my research topic at the event, and to listen to interesting findings from other researchers.”

A changing environment brings with it biodiversity loss. One way to help protect is to understand host-microbe interactions that can be associated with fish health. By investigating wild fish gut microbiota, we can also broaden our knowledge and protect both macro and micro-fauna.

With research interests in microbiota and host well-being, final year PhD student Melissa Soh will be sharing about wild fish gut microbiota host selection and enrichment, as well as the host innate parameters that influence wild fish microbiota.

How might disruptive innovations help our population (who are healthy, at risk, or with illness), healthcare and social service providers build sustainable, relationship-based person-centric care models, by allowing better ownership of good health?

The Centre for Healthcare Innovation at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) is extending the call for market-ready proposals for Reshaping Preventive Care for A Healthier Population to 29 May 2023, 2359H (SGT).

TLA is delighted to support this initiative alongside Ministry of Health, Singapore, Temasek Foundation, Vertex Ventures, Singapore Biodesign and more.
