No two spills are exactly the same. Do you know what to do when faced with these 4 main types of spills?

-Oil & fuel
Use absorbent pads, socks and spill kits designed to absorb hydrocarbons. Prevent the spill from reaching drains or waterways at all costs.

-Chemicals
Don the right type of PPE and use the right type of absorbents. Never assume the same spill kit works for every chemical.

-Water and water-based
These might appear relatively harmless, but they can create serious slip hazards. Contain the liquid with booms and socks to make cleanup and drying easier.

-Unknown substances
Don't rush in. Isolate the area, identify the substance and follow the appropriate emergency procedure.

But the best spill control is still prevention. With regular equipment inspections, proper storage protocol and regular training, you wouldn’t need to guess the nature of a spill if the spill never happens.

At United Resources, our Spill Control solutions help workplaces prepare for, respond to and prevent spills. We are an all-in-one solutions provider, from absorbents and spill kits to practical advice on selecting the right solution.

Ammonia: Friend or Foe?

In June this year, an ammonia leak at a cold storage facility caused two people to be taken to the hospital:
https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/fishery-port-road-premises-evacuated-after-ammonia-detected-scdf-hazmat-team-on-site

Ammonia is a toxic gas that quickly bonds with moisture, causing chemical burns to exposed eyes and skin. When breathed in, ammonia is detrimental to the lungs and can be fatal to humans if exposed to it in large quantities.

Sounds like a chemical to be avoided, right?

No. Ammonia also has promising applications as a low-emission fuel. In 2024, one of Japan’s largest power plants successfully carried out a trial where ammonia substituted coal and saw a reduction of carbon emissions by 20%:
https://www.nature.com/articles/d42473-024-00441-4

In the marine industry, ammonia is gaining traction as a green fuel that keeps the wheels of logistics greased without the carbon debt.

In reality, every type of substance has risks, but these risks can be managed with smart planning and the right kinds of PPE. As ammonia becomes more common in the working world, workers will need ammonia-specific PPE like respirators and coveralls to keep them safe.

Team UR thrives on being ahead of the curve: prepared with a good selection of ammonia PPE, we also provide solutions for many other chemicals to ensure workers can work efficiently and go home safely.

Does your workplace have unique challenges or needs? Let us know how we can help.

How often should you replace your fall protection PPE?

Your wearable fall protection equipment is regularly exposed to harsh working conditions. Even equipment that looks fine can have damage that isn't immediately obvious. After all, even UV radiation can weaken the integrity of lanyards and harnesses over time.

When these things happen, it’s time to replace your equipment:

1. After a fall or significant loading
If you’ve fallen wearing your fall protection equipment, the equipment should be removed from service and assessed by a competent person. More likely than not, it has sustained damage that might make it less capable of sustaining you in a second fall.

2. When damage or deterioration is found
If your harness or lanyard has been visibly compromised, stop using equipment and have it assessed. See a cut, burn, or fray on your equipment? It’s likely time to retire it.

3. When it reaches the manufacturer's service life
Different products have different recommended lifespans. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and applicable requirements rather than relying on a universal replacement date.

4. When inspections identify a problem
Regular pre-use checks are important, but some systems require more detailed periodic inspection by a competent person.

This is where UR Services can help.

Our fall protection services provide a one stop shop. From inspection to training, installation to maintenance, we are all about helping organisations keep their fall protection systems in safe working condition throughout their lifecycle.

Don't wait until equipment fails before checking it. Because when you're working at height, your fall protection system is something you shouldn't have to second-guess.

Innovation in safety isn't always about inventing something new. Sometimes, it's about looking at an old problem differently.

At United Resources, we believe that good solutions start with a simple question:
“Is there a better way to do this?”

It could mean using smart technology to track respirator filter life instead of relying on manual records.

It could mean using AR technology to bring technical expertise to a worker without sending another person into a potentially hazardous environment.

It could mean using robotics to assist with water rescue, reducing the need to expose another worker to danger.

And sometimes, it means taking an existing product and finding a completely new application for it.

This is the thinking behind UR Innovations, where we explore technology, equipment and ideas that can make workplaces safer, smarter and more efficient.

Because innovation isn't about technology for technology's sake. It's about solving real problems, reducing exposure to hazards and making safety work better for the people who rely on it.

Don't just accept that something is “the way it's always been done.” Ask what could be done better. And if you need a partner to identify and discuss gaps in your workplace protocol, we are always happy to help. We love a challenge; let us shoulder this burden for you!

Humans of UR: Mary

“Game of Thrones is my favourite TV series! But honestly, it should have ended by Season 6…”

Meet Mary, one of UR’s customer service stars, who loves travels, television and trying new things.

Originally from the Philippines, Mary graduated as a customs broker and began working while still at university.

In 2018, friends working in Singapore encouraged her to make the move. “I was very nervous because it was my first time working overseas. I wasn't familiar with the environment, and it was difficult to leave my family behind.”

Joining UR brought another challenge. Moving into customer service meant communicating directly with customers, something that did not come naturally to a self-described introvert. “All those Singlish words took time to learn!”

Over time, Mary grew more confident. “Before, talking was a struggle for me. Now I can freely speak with customers and give my opinions to my teammates.” She also supports the sales team when needed. For Mary, being a good team player means being willing to help wherever she can.

Her journey at UR has spanned multiple office moves and the challenges of COVID. Through it all, one thing has remained constant: the support of her colleagues. “There were times when I had challenges, but with their help, I was able to do it.”

Outside work, Mary enjoys quiet time, karaoke with friends and travelling, especially to cooler destinations. “Singapore is hot enough as it is!” One memorable trip to Sa Pa, Vietnam saw her crossing a high suspension bridge. “I regretted it immediately, but I couldn't turn back!”

Looking back, she is glad she tried. That experience reflects a lesson she carries with her: “Don't be afraid to try. If you feel like you want to do it, just try.”

From a quiet university student to a confident customer service professional, Mary's journey is a reminder that growth does not always happen comfortably.

And perhaps this exchange from her favourite show says it best:

“Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid?”
“That is the only time a man can be brave.”

A great time of feasting, fun and friendly competition was had at our annual UR Family Day retreat!

From 31st Jul to 2nd Aug, our team hopped onto a bus to Kuala Lumpur for well-earned rest and relaxation. Along ample free time to explore the city and get our shopping done, we also enjoyed team activities where we got to flex our creativity and willingness to go all out.

A big thank you to management and the planning committee for making this fun-filled retreat happen!
