IES Celebrates Singapore’s 61st Birthday with Inaugural National Day Observance 🎉

This morning (7 Aug), IES hosted its first-ever National Day Observance ceremony! Dressed in the iconic National Day colours of red and white, attendees were led by the IES President, Mr Mervyn Sirisena, as Council members, the Young Engineers Committee, Student Chapters, staff from IES and IES Academy, and young guests from a neighbouring child development centre gathered to mark the occasion.

Together, attendees sang the National Anthem, recited the National Pledge, and enjoyed a celebratory cake-cutting to mark Singapore’s 61st birthday. The landmark ceremony served as a meaningful occasion to honour our nation's pioneers while reaffirming IES' allegiance to Singapore. ❤️

Raising the Bar for Foundation Testing

The IES Standards Development Organisation (IES-SDO) was honoured to launch the SS 723:2026 on Bi-directional Load Testing, in collaboration with Geotechnical Society of Singapore (GeoSS), Building and Construction Authority (BCA), Singapore Standards Council and Enterprise Singapore on 21 July 2026.

Developed through extensive collaboration among government agencies, industry practitioners, academia and professional institutions, the standard represents the progression of TR 63:2018 into a full-fledged Singapore Standard.

This transition is more than a change in document status. It introduces several important enhancements that will benefit the industry:

🔹 A nationally recognised Singapore Standard that provides greater confidence for adoption in projects and contractual references.

🔹 Clearer roles and terminology, strengthening accountability among Qualified Persons, Specialist Builders and testing specialists throughout the testing process.

🔹 Improved instrumentation and digital data requirements, promoting higher-quality testing, greater transparency and better traceability of results.

🔹 Greater emphasis on engineering design and test planning, reinforcing that successful pile testing begins long before the test itself.

🔹 A more transparent approach to interpreting test results to provide clearer guidance on deriving the equivalent top load-settlement curve, helping engineers better understand and verify test outcomes.

Beyond the launch, the workshop brought together Qualified Persons, contractors, consultants, testing specialists, instrumentation experts, academia and overseas practitioners to exchange insights on bi-directional load testing, rapid load testing, automation, instrumentation and international practices. 🤝

The discussions highlighted how advanced pile load testing can support the industry in building smarter, faster and with a lower carbon footprint, by improving foundation verification, optimising designs, reducing material waste and enhancing site productivity, while maintaining high standards of safety and reliability. 🌱

Standards are often viewed only as the final published document. In reality, they are the outcome of years of technical discussions, consensus-building and the dedication of industry experts and volunteers who generously contribute their time, knowledge and experience.

🎉 Congratulations to everyone involved in the development of SS 723:2026!

Together, we continue to shape a safer, more productive and more sustainable built environment through standards. 🌱🏙️
