Another successful IoT deployment completed!

GMM Technoworld has successfully deployed a UbiBot LoRa environmental monitoring system at the Bidfood warehouse, covering more than 10 cold rooms, freezer rooms and chiller rooms.

The solution includes a UbiBot LoRa gateway connected to multiple LoRa temperature sensors, enabling centralised, real-time monitoring across the warehouse.

With this system, the operations team can:

Celebrating 21 Weeks of Learning and Growth

After 21 weeks of internship at GMM Technoworld Pte Ltd, Suu, a Temasek Polytechnic student from Myanmar, has successfully completed her internship journey with us.

During this period, she gained valuable hands-on experience in:

• Modbus RTU communication
• Hardware interfacing and system integration
• Troubleshooting and technical problem-solving
• Project planning and management

Most importantly, Suu successfully completed two technical projects—turning classroom knowledge into practical solutions. Along the way, she learned that engineering is not only about making a system work. It also requires careful planning, testing, documentation, communication and continuous improvement.

One of her most valuable takeaways is the PDCA approach:

Plan — Understand the requirements and prepare the work.
Do — Implement the solution step by step.
Check — Test the results, identify problems and verify performance.
Act — Improve the solution and apply what has been learned.

As her mentor and trainer, I am pleased to see Suu grow in technical confidence, independence and workplace responsibility. Her willingness to learn, accept feedback and overcome challenges will serve her well in her future career.

Should ITE’s Work-Study Diploma Focus More on Mature, Work-Ready Adults?

I recently participated in an ITE Work-Study Diploma (WSDip) focus group discussion as a company owner and sponsoring employer.

The WSDip provides an important progression pathway for Higher Nitec graduates, including those whose academic results may not meet the admission requirements for a full-time polytechnic diploma.

However, a 2.5-year work-study programme requires more than academic ability. Trainees must manage full-time employment, workplace responsibilities, assignments and examinations at the same time. This demands maturity, discipline and a clear commitment to their chosen career.

For sponsoring companies, the investment is substantial. We provide salary, structured workplace training, supervision, mentoring and time for the employee to study. When a trainee withdraws before completing the programme, both the employee and employer lose this investment.

To improve completion rates and encourage more companies to participate, I believe the WSDip should be positioned more clearly as an industry-based diploma for mature and work-ready learners.

Admission and employer matching should place greater emphasis on:

• Relevant employment or internship experience
• Maturity and readiness for working life
• Genuine interest in the selected industry
• Ability to balance employment and study
• Commitment to completing the full 2.5-year programme
• For male applicants, completion of National Service where applicable

Academic results should remain part of the assessment, but they should not be the only consideration. Prior working experience, workplace attitude and career motivation may be stronger indicators of whether a trainee will succeed.

The ITE Work-Study Diploma should also be differentiated from a conventional full-time polytechnic diploma. Its value lies in applied learning—combining formal education with real responsibilities, industry experience and workplace competency.

Stronger candidate screening, realistic job previews and better employer–trainee matching would improve outcomes for everyone:

Trainees gain a recognised diploma and meaningful career experience.
Employers develop capable employees and achieve a better return on training.
ITE strengthens the credibility and recognition of the work-study pathway.

When the right candidates are matched with the right employers, more companies will have the confidence to sponsor—and more trainees will successfully complete the journey.

“When Products Become Increasingly Similar, Why Would Customers Still Choose You?”

Earlier this month, I visited five SMEs in Penang during a four-day business learning trip. I returned with an important reflection:

As technology advances, product features, pricing and information are becoming increasingly transparent—and easier to replicate.

So, what can an SME compete on?

The answer may not lie only in the product, but in the people behind it.

Customers may approach us because of what we sell, but they stay because they trust our service, understand our values and believe that we genuinely care about their needs.

Being small can also be an advantage. SMEs are closer to customers, make decisions faster and can respond more personally. When we listen carefully, we often discover that customers are not simply asking, “What do I want?” They are also asking, “Why do I need it, and can I trust you?”

The five companies I visited did not offer a single formula for success. Instead, they reminded me of four important principles:

稳心 — Stay grounded amid uncertainty
破局 — Have the courage to change
起行 — Turn insight into action

In an AI-driven world where products may become increasingly similar, the most difficult advantage to copy is still the same:
