Together into the quantum future!

BRICS Quantum Technologies Forum was held in Moscow for the first time. Scientists from five countries exchanged ideas and outlined plans for cooperation: Russia, China, India, Brazil and South Africa.

The joint development of quantum technologies will help to:
• Develop and create new inventions faster to unlock the potential of various industries including nuclear energy.
• Make technology more accessible and strengthen the technological sovereignty of the BRICS countries.
• Exchange experience and learn from each other as scientists from different countries.

Following the forum, the participating countries issued a joint statement in which they reaffirmed their intention to continue their cooperation: "Together, we are committed to ensuring sustainable technological progress in the BRICS countries," the document reads.

Quantum technologies will affect everything from medicine and ecology to finance and security.

Today, it sounds like science fiction, but tomorrow it will become part of our daily lives!

At SPIEF 2026, Rosatom dedicated its exhibition stand to technologies that help extend active life and support human health.

Inspired by Russian folklore, the stand shows how ideas once associated with magic — healing, rejuvenation and transformation — are becoming real through modern science: early diagnostics, nuclear medicine, rehabilitation and preventive healthcare.

For Rosatom, innovation goes far beyond energy. It is also about technologies that improve quality of life.

While the participants continue to take part in the quiz, we keep preparing for the arctic expedition!

There won’t be any usual entertainment like social media, streaming services and videogames on the icebreaker. So maybe it’s time to start thinking what to do in your free time.

What to pack for a trip to the North Pole — “entertainment” edition:

🦭 A book. Good old friend that won’t let you down in any situation. Better not bring it up to the deck — a sudden gust of wind might blow it away and your book will entertain polar bear instead of you!
🦭 A notebook and a pen. Breathtaking arctic nature may serve as a great inspiration source. In case you are seized with the sudden urge for creation, you’ll have all the necessary tools.
🦭 Card games. There is no better way to get to know each other than to play some fun team games. They’ll help you to pass the cold evenings in your cabins.

The competition for participation in the Icebreaker of Knowledge is open from May 5, the winners will have the opportunity to join a unique Arctic expedition on a nuclear icebreaker “50 Let Pobedy”!

Such trip requires a proper preparation — let’s find out, what to pack for a trip to the North Pole?

👨‍🚀 Clothes and boots

In the harsh arctic weather, it is crucial to maintain balance in the way you dress. The more you put on, the more you sweat, meaning you will give off all the warmth.

You’ll definitely need:
1. Thermal underwear. The most important element of the inner clothing layer.
2. Thermal and wool socks. Don’t hesitate to pack several pairs!
3. Fleece jacket or hoodie. The second layer will keep you warm.
4. Wind- and waterproof overcoat.
5. Boots. They also should be waterproof.

🤿 Also don’t forget the accessories:

• Wool hat. Always keep your head warm.
• Balaclava. In case your hat won’t be enough
• Gloves. A must-have in the Arctic.
• Sunglasses. They will protect you from the sun and the snow.

The RAREMET-2026 International Congress, the leading event in the field of rare and rare earth metals, was held in Moscow.

The organizer of the congress is JSC Giredmet, an enterprise of the scientific division of Rosatom.

The main topics of the event were innovation, international cooperation, technology exchange and training for the rare earth industry.

Following the congress, a number of agreements were reached with foreign partners:

• A memorandum with the Indian company Nexon Geochem Private Limited on joint research and development of technologies for the deep processing of raw materials containing rare and rare earth metals. The parties plan to implement projects to produce materials for the electronic, chemical, and nuclear industries.

• An agreement with the Indian TEXMiN (Technology Innovation in Exploration & Mining Foundation) on joint research and development of technologies for the production of rare earth permanent magnets, as well as on joint scientific research, academic exchanges and advisory support for programs in the field of critical minerals and rare earth metals.

• Negotiations with the Joint Russian-Vietnamese Tropical Research and Technology Center. The parties confirmed their interest in developing joint research programs and technological cooperation between Russia and Vietnam in the field of critical materials.

The largest industry platform brought together over 800 participants from 20 countries. Among them were leading scientists, government officials, industrial corporations, and engineering companies from India, China, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Cuba, Egypt, Belarus, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Pakistan, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Armenia, Iran, Malaysia, Singapore and South Africa.

The floating nuclear power plant celebrates six years since its commissioning!

The world's first and only nuclear power plant, based on the floating power unit Akademik Lomonosov, continues to provide heat and light to the people of Pevek, Russia's northernmost city.
Over six years of operation, the floating nuclear power plant generated more than 1.3 billion kWh of electricity and completely replaced the capacity of the decommissioned Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant.

Here are some more interesting facts about the operation of the floating nuclear power plant:

🛳️ The floating nuclear power plant can provide electricity and heat to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people.
🛳️ The two KLT-40S reactor units which the station is equipped with were developed based on the units for the nuclear icebreakers Taimyr and Vaigach.
🛳️ Every day, the floating nuclear power plant produces up to 70 MW of electricity and 50 Gcal/h of heat to the Chaun-Bilibino power grid.
🛳️ Over the years of operation, the floating nuclear power plant has prevented the release of more than 400 thousand tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
🛳️ The main difference between a floating nuclear power plant and a conventional nuclear power plant is its mobility and adaptability. A floating power unit can be towed to any region where electricity is needed.
🛳️ The floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) marked the beginning of a family of floating nuclear power plants. Today, Rosatom is developing modernized floating power units based on the latest-generation RITM-200 reactor systems – for both operation in Arctic latitudes and installation in countries with hot climates.

⚛ RITM-400

The RITM-400 is an upgraded and even more powerful version of the RITM-200.

In 2025, Rosatom manufactured two RITM-400 units for the icebreaker Rossiya of project 10510, which is currently under construction. This super-powerful nuclear icebreaker will have improved icebreaking capabilities enabling it to navigate through ice up to four meters thick and create 50-meter-wide channels. This will ensure regular shipping through the eastern section of the Northern Sea Route.

Due to their superpower, the RITM-400 reactor units were named after Russian epic heroes — Ilya Muromets and Dobrynya Nikitich. Each of these units has a capacity of 315 MW, which significantly exceeds the capacity of any other existing propulsion reactor unit.

“The second stage of the "Icebreaker of Knowledge" competition has started!

Countries of Southeast Asia are actively joining the selection process. We have already received more than 30 applications from Indonesia and more than 20 from Vietnam and Myanmar. Tell your friends and share this post so that more children can learn about the competition.

After successfully completing the online quiz, the participants are in for a series of educational webinars on Rosatom's cutting-edge technologies, including those for the development of safe navigation in the Arctic.

For example, did you know that a nuclear icebreaker doesn't simply break ice, but rather navigates through it by “pushing” its bow against the surface? The ice obstacle breaks up under the icebreaker’s weight, and the ice chunks drift apart. This creates a channel for the icebreaker and the vessel following it.

The webinars should be studied very carefully — after watching them the participants will need to complete the tasks.

The most attentive participants, those with the highest scores in stages 1 and 2, will advance to the finals. The final task will be to prepare a video presentation for the expert jury.
