Following a couple of record-setting flights set by NASA-backed teams and DLR engineers with our ultra-light fuel cells, HES Energy Systems (www.hes.sg) was formed in Singapore, where it established its first laboratories. From Singapore, it has developed an international customer base in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in civilian and military applications. HES is regarded as the most
advanced fuel cell technology systems developer in the world, with energy densities already exceeding the 2015 performance targets set by US DOE in 2015. HES has worked under a US DARPA program in 2010 and 2011, focused on novel power solution development in the field of micro-UAVs. Since 2011, HES expanded into developing ground-based critical power and portable systems. The company works mostly under confidential on-going contracts with several leading OEM customers around the world, while offering off-the-shelf systems to support market adoption of its special grade fuel cells. The company's typical power unit scale is below 3kW, and uses a variety of hydrogen storage solutions, many of which do not use hydrogen as a gas, but generate hydrogen "on demand" from other feedstock, typically as a result of hydrolysis or reforming. The capability at HES now also includes larger systems (beyond 3kW) used as range extenders in various efforts seeking to develop larger-scale electric flight vehicles. The HES team comprised of scientists, engineers and field experts work together to creatively solve the most challenging power supply challenges. HES consitently innovates to create power system solutions that are different from and better than those of competing technologies. It brings out the best of fuel cells, solar, battery and capacitor technologies in optimally balanced hybrid systems that typically outperforms the individual parts.
