How light is too light for optical sorting?

Sometimes, the best way to show what one machine can do is not through specifications, brochures, or technical data. It is simply to show the results.
All the materials you see here were sorted on the same MEYER KR Series sorter.

Of course, sorting each of these materials is a different story.
There is no single setting that works for everything. Each material requires an individual approach and parameters adjusted to its specific characteristics and sorting requirements. For some of these tests, color sorting was enough. For others, we added shape recognition. And in some cases, AI models became part of the sorting process.

This is also why testing is such an important part of what we do at MEYER Europe. A specification can tell you what a machine was designed to do. A real material test shows you what it can actually do. And sometimes we are just as curious as our customers about what else we can put through the KR and what sorting path we can develop for it.

Sorting pistachios is not only about separating good product from bad product. There is much more value to be found in between.

In this application, we start with one mixed stream of pistachios and separate it into five very clean fractions: whole pistachios, halves, quarters, shells and moldy product. What makes this process particularly interesting is that three of these fractions are valuable final products.

Whole pistachios are the most obvious one, but halves and quarters also have their own applications and their own market value. Instead of mixing all acceptable pieces together, the sorting process allows us to separate them into individual, clean fractions that can be used or sold according to their specific purpose. At the same time, shells and moldy pistachios are precisely removed from the product stream.

This means that sorting is doing much more than improving the quality of the final product. It also helps the processor make better use of the raw material and recover more value from the same input.

this is one of the most important aspects of modern sorting technology. A good sorting process should not only identify defects. It should also recognize the differences within the good product and use those differences to create additional value. One input product, separated according to quality and size, with each fraction ending up exactly where it brings the most value.

At first glance, they all fall into the same category: granulates that need sorting. But that’s pretty much where the similarities end.

In one case, the task is to separate round granules from cylindrical ones.
In another, we need to detect and remove granules that have stuck together.
And in the third, the sorting process is based on color differences.

It’s a good example of what sorting looks like in practice.

There is no single setting called “granulate”. Each material has its own characteristics, and each type of defect requires the sorter to look at something different.
Sometimes it’s all about shape. Sometimes size or structure. And sometimes it comes down to subtle differences in color.

Even after working with many similar applications, we still come across materials that make us spend a little more time on the settings. Test. Adjust. Look at the problem from a different angle.
It starts with understanding what exactly we need to find in the material.
And then we teach the sorter to find it with us.

There’s something quite satisfying about watching frozen blueberries being sorted. Especially when you know how much is actually happening behind the scenes.
Frozen products come with their own challenges: frost, colour variations, irregular shapes and, most importantly, the need to remove unwanted material without losing good product along the way.
This is where the right sorting technology makes a real difference.
In this application, our sorter analyses the product in real time, identifies defects and foreign material, and quickly separates them from the good blueberries.

Blueberries are just another example. The same approach can be adapted to a wide range of frozen products, from berries and other fruits to vegetables and herbs.

Every installation tells a different story. This one, completed in South Africa, is a great example of how the right technology, careful engineering, and close cooperation with the customer come together to deliver great results.

The processing line was designed for an input capacity of 3.5 tons per hour. Produce exceptionally pure polypropylene while creating clean and consistent color fractions that match the customer's production requirements.

The process begins with a MEYER CG MAX color sorter that removes the black flakes directly from the incoming material. Eliminating this large portion at the very beginning creates a much more stable feed for the following stages and improves the overall efficiency of the polymer sorting and entire line.
The core of the installation is the CI 8 polymer sorter. Its task is to accurately separate polyethylene from polypropylene while maintaining extremely high PP purity and minimizing valuable material losses. Achieving both targets at the same time requires more than advanced sorting technology. It requires the right machine settings, process know how, and extensive testing.
The final stage is handled by another CG MAX, dedicated to polypropylene color sorting. White was the customer's highest priority, but the system also produces two additional PP color groups, giving the customer greater flexibility for downstream applications.

The process delivers five clean fractions:
- black
- PE
- white PP
- warm PP
- cold PP

Beyond the technical performance, this project reflects something equally important. It is another successful installation built through excellent cooperation between the Meyer team and our customer. From the first discussions to commissioning, every stage required commitment, experience, and attention to detail.

The example below shows color sorting of fresh diced carrots. This type of application is a perfect example of how optical sorting improves product quality by removing unwanted defects while maintaining high throughput and consistent performance.

At Meyer, we develop sorting solutions for a wide range of fresh fruits and vegetables. Some applications require only reliable color sorting, while others demand much more advanced inspection. There is nothing unusual about sorting frozen chili peppers. Until you start looking at the details.

A product leaving a freezer behaves differently. Low temperatures, changing surface conditions and high quality expectations make inspection significantly more demanding than it may appear.

For this application, the Meyer KE Series optical sorter works alongside the XS Series X Ray detector, combining visual sorting with internal foreign object inspection in a single production flow.

The equipment is engineered to operate in ambient temperatures from minus 20°C to plus 50°C. Just as importantly, it is designed for food production environments where cleaning cannot become a bottleneck. The machines allow thorough high pressure water cleaning while maintaining a hygienic design.

Chili peppers are only one example. The same technology can be adapted for frozen vegetables, fresh produce, berries and many other fruit and vegetable applications, with the inspection criteria tailored to each product.

MEYER Team received very clear instructions from our client: dark particles had to be removed from the plastic sample. The goal was to deliver only clean, light colored pieces that meet their standards.
