Difference Between Architectural Drawings and Structural Drawings and Their importance for Building Permit Approval in Sierra Leone?
In the construction industry, Architectural drawings and Structural drawings are two separate but complementary sets of documents. A building cannot be properly designed, approved or constructed without both. While the Architectural drawings focus on the appearance, functionality, and space planning of a building, the structural drawings ensure that the building is strong, stable and safe throughout its life span.
For identification purpose the first image is Architectural Model and the second image is Structural model image.
Why Both Drawings are Mandatory?
Without Architectural Drawings:
1. Authorities cannot accesses planning compliance.
2. Contractors lack information about the building layout and finishes.
Without Structural Drawings:
1. The building may not safely support it loads.
2.There is a greater risk of Structural failure.
A building with only architectural drawings may look attractive but could be unsafe. Conversely, a building with only structural drawings would be safe in theory but would lack the design information needed for planning approval and construction. Both are essential.
