We don’t have an infrastructure problem. We have an engineering accountability problem.

Every rainy season, the same story repeats itself.
Flooding. Collapsed structures. Blocked drainage systems.

And every year, we respond like it is unexpected.

But it isn’t.

We are not short of engineers.
We are not short of knowledge.
We are short of enforcement, planning, and long-term thinking.

So the question is not: Why is infrastructure failing?

The question is: Why are we still building systems we know will fail?

At the SLIE Biennial Conference 2026, we are creating space to confront these realities - and rethink how we design, build, and maintain the systems that carry this country.

The Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers (SLIE) invites engineers, researchers, academics, students, and professionals to submit technical papers for presentation at the upcoming Biennial Conference under the theme:

“𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒊𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒂 𝑳𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝑾𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒓𝒆: 𝑨 𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉.”

What an inspiring week it was in Shanghai as the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) hosted its Global General Assembly and Congress 2025, bringing together engineers from every corner of the globe to share ideas, celebrate innovation, and shape the future of our profession.

The Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers (SLIE) was proudly represented by two of our own: 𝐈𝐧𝐠. Trudy Morgan and 𝐈𝐧𝐠. Obinna Anthony Browne.

Engineer. Morgan, a trailblazer and mentor to many, was celebrated at a Commonwealth Engineering Council Dinner in her honor as President-elect of the Council, a truly historic and emotional moment for Sierra Leone and the entire African engineering community. She also left a lasting impression at the Women in Engineering Committee meeting amongst others, where her words inspired many to keep breaking barriers and building bridges through leadership and excellence.

Ing. Obinna Browne brought energy and vision to the Young Engineers/Future Leaders Committee meeting, engaging meaningfully with peers from around the world. His thoughtful contributions reflected the bright future of engineering. He also had the privilege of representing Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers at the WFEO General Assembly.

From the breathtaking engineering feats of Shanghai to the meaningful global connections forged, our delegates return home deeply inspired, ready to apply new ideas, foster collaboration, and continue elevating the practice of engineering in Sierra Leone.

Dear Colleagues, SLIE extends profound gratitude to all who participated at the ENGINEERS HEALTH WALK. It was inspiring to see so many of you step out to enjoy fresh air, movement, and camaraderie. Initiatives like this not only boost our physical wellness but also strengthen our connection as Engineers. Let's do this more often!

SLIE would also like to thank the SLEDP Team for granting us access to the Leicester Peak Viewpoint site. It was an invaluable opportunity to witness firsthand the incredible work being done on site.
