Why suction piping diameter is bigger than discharge in centrifugal pump?
Design Suction Side:
A larger suction diameter directly reduces fluid velocity according to the continuity equation (Q = A × V), where flow rate Q remains constant.
The Lower velocities provide several critical benefits:
- Reduced friction losses
- NPSH preservation
- Improved suction performance.
Design Discharge Side
The discharge side operates at elevated pressures generated by the pump impeller, typically several times higher than suction pressure. This pressure margin provides flexibility in pipe sizing:
- Velocity tolerance
- Economic optimization
- Space efficiency
