CEG KMUTT We also examine the effectiveness of protected areas and infrastructure impacts on wildlife.

Conservation Ecology Program/Conservation Ecology Group (CEG), a research laboratory under King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT-Thailand), primarily studies ecology of threatened species, habitat management and wildlife conservation. The Conservation Ecology Program/Conservation Ecology Group (CEG) is a research laboratory under the School of Bioresources and Technology, King Mo

ngkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), Thailand. CEG focuses primarily on the ecology of terrestrial vertebrates of Southeast Asia, publishing baseline data including population size and/or density estimation, impacts of human disturbance, foraging behavior, habitat selection, or broad-scale predictive mapping. The focal taxa include species that are data deficient and/or highly threatened such as galliformes, small mammalian carnivores, and primates. CEG is a diverse research team made up of staff and students from over 13 countries in Asia, Europe and North America, and we regularly collaborate with other institutions in Southeast Asia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Belgium, and Australia. CEG places great importance on training and offers a variety of courses/workshops for regional researchers and students, for instance, statistical modeling in ecology, field techniques for wildlife study, GIS for natural resources management. A limited number of graduate students are accepted per year with available scholarships. Our graduate program aims to prepare students for a career as researchers and/or managers of protected areas. Coursework lays the foundation for enabling students to conduct independent research for their planned thesis projects and future work after graduation.

Guess what’s coming?
Here’s your clue,
Fill the blank and tell us who: 👀
“From mountain peak to ocean tide,
Through rippling stream to the forest wide,
‘___’ live to sustain the breath of all that reside.”

It was our pleasure to co-host the Macaulay Library / eBird / Merlin Sound Recording Workshop at the Sakaerat Environmental Research Station from May 7–10, 2026. Shout out to the team leads from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, our co-hosts from the Bird Conservation Society of Thailand (BCST), and the Sakaerat Environmental Research Station for their support and facilities throughout the training program! We had a great time with all the wonderful participants who made this workshop such an enjoyable and productive experience. Throughout the workshop, we got hands-on experience using shotgun and parabolic microphones, learned how to process and upload our audio to the Macaulay Library database, and successfully contributed numerous high-quality recordings of relatively restricted-range taxa, such as the iconic Siamese Fireback, 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 Scaly-crowned Babbler, and 𝘥𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘪 Brown Prinia. These contributions are valuable reference material for the continued development of the Merlin Bird ID app and support bird monitoring. We can’t wait to see how this data benefits more research in the future!

New excitement unlocked! Our Small Carnivore team has some incredible footage to share from the field! The Hairy-nosed otter (Lutra sumatrana) is listed as Endangered by IUCN and is considered one of the rarest otter species in the world. In fact, it was believed to be entirely extinct until small populations were rediscovered in the late '90s. In Thailand, their survival is severely threatened by habitat loss from land encroachment and devastating forest fires. Human presence and domestic dogs also pose potential risks, as these otters have a much lower tolerance for human-induced disturbance than their close relatives, the Smooth-coated otter and the Asian small-clawed otter.
The CEG Small Carnivore team is working hard to collect data for the population monitoring of Hairy-nosed otter in southern Thailand, surveys led by Anucha Kamjing. Are you passionate about nature and wildlife? Do you want to contribute to global conservation efforts or pursue a career in wildlife and habitat management? Take your passion to the next level with our graduate programs in Conservation Ecology at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT)! Our academic advisors offer a wide range of expertise, giving you the opportunity to work on diverse research projects that match your interests. We are dedicated to building our students' capacity to solve research problems independently, with all work grounded in professional ethics and integrity. Throughout the program, you will learn theoretical knowledge, master advanced methodologies, and stay updated on scientific discoveries.
Our M.Sc. (2 years) and Ph.D. (3 years) programs have enrollment periods in August and January. We highly encourage prospective students to reach out early to ensure project availability and to get a head start on securing limited funding. Please directly contact the academic advisors who work on the projects you are interested in.
