what is fracture mechanics and How can you see it by High speed camera ?

Fracture mechanics is the study of how cracks grow and break apart in materials under stress, and high-speed cameras capture these ultra-fast crack movements frame by frame.
What is Fracture Mechanics?
• Study of cracks: It looks at small flaws inside materials like metal, glass, or plastics ETC.
• Stress concentration: It measures how force pushes on the sharp tip of a crack.
• Predicting failure: Engineers use it to stop bridges, planes, and machines from breaking suddenly.
• Toughness: It measures how much energy a material can absorb before it snaps.

How High-Speed Cameras See Fractures
• Extreme frame rates: These cameras record from 10,000 to over 1,000,000 frames per second.(fps)
• Freezing motion: Cracks move at the speed of sound in a material. A regular camera sees only a blur, but a high-speed camera makes the movement look like slow motion.
• Special lighting: Bright flashes or lasers light up the tiny crack tip as it opens.
• Visual techniques:
o Digital Image Correlation (DIC): Tracking painted dot patterns on the surface to see how the material stretches.
o Photoelasticity: Using polarized light through clear plastics to show colorful rainbow lines of hidden stress.

• Crack initiation: The exact moment the material starts to tear.
• Crack speed: How fast the dark line of the crack rips across the object.
• Crack branching: When one fast crack splits into two or three separate cracks.
• Stress waves: Invisible shockwaves bouncing through the material right after the break.

What Is ‘Calibration’ and How Does It Differ From Adjustment?

Calibration is a term historically associated with the balance adjustment process. It means determining the deviations of a measuring instrument. Before calibration, the balance is in the reference position, adjustments are made (if possible) and then the systematic error and random error of the balance are determined. Calibration results are given together with the uncertainty of their determination.
Adjustment, on the other hand, is a set of activities through which a measuring instrument is made to operate in accordance with its intended use. In the case of electronic balances, the device’s sensitivity is corrected by comparing the weighing result of the internal adjustment standard with its reference value.
Types of Adjustment (Calibration):
• Automatic internal adjustment – controlled by temperature and time changes
• Manual internal adjustment – carried out by means of an internal adjustment balance’s button
• External adjustment – performed using an external mass standard of a declared mass, which cannot be modified.
Note! External adjustment is possible for balances which are not a subject to conformity assessment (verification).
Internal Adjustment (Calibration)
The process is fully automatic and requires no intervention from the operator. If the weighing pan is loaded, a message will appear on the display instructing the user to remove the load. If the load on the weighing pan is small (up to approx. 4% of the balance’s maximum capacity), automatic adjustment will still take place, but the weighing results will differ by the mass of that load.
External Adjustment (Calibration)
The process is carried out by the operator using an external mass standard, the value of which is stored in the balance’s factory menu. This function is not available on balances which are not a subject to conformity assessment (verification).
Internal Adjustment (Calibration) – Is It Worth Paying Extra for?
Internal adjustment takes place automatically, meaning it does not require operator intervention. This translates into savings in time and labour, and furthermore, the process carries no risk of human error. If the balance is to be used in an area where weighing results have legal or financial implications, it must be verified, which means it must have internal adjustment. This applies, amongst other things, to areas such as:
• Trade and retail
• Taxes, customs duties, fees and penalties
• Medicine and pharmacy
• Courts, experts and administration
• Laboratories.
In summary, internal adjustment is a feature worth paying extra for.

Force matters—but measured force matters even more when it comes to material testing. ISO 7500-1:2018 lays down the international requirements for calibrating and verifying uniaxial tension/compression testing machines.

: Operation that establishes the relationship between the force values (with associated uncertainties) indicated by the testing machine and those measured by one or more force-proving instruments.
: Confirmation, based on analysis of measurements in accordance with this document, that the performance properties of the testing machine achieve the limits given for a specified class What does the standard ensure? General inspection of the machine for mechanical integrity Calibration of the force-measuring system using certified force-proving instruments Verification of system errors like indication, Repeatability, Reversibility, Resolution & zero error.
: Machines are classified (Class 0.5 to Class 3) based on the permissible deviation limits in their force indicators.
of machine indicates the maximum permissible indication value (q, %) for example for Class 1 Machine the maximum permissible indication value(q) is ± 1.0. The lower limit of the range shall not be less than resolution (r) multiplied by:
— 400 for class 0,5;
— 200 for class 1;
— 100 for class 2;
— 67 for class 3.
Why does this matter ???
Accurate force measurement is foundational in tensile, compressive & flexural testing of metallic materials, especially in sectors like aerospace, civil engineering, and manufacturing.
Pro Tip: ISO recommends verification shall be carried out at intervals not exceeding 12 months or after any major Relocation or Repair.
