what is fracture mechanics and How can you see it by High speed camera ?
Fracture mechanics is the study of how cracks grow and break apart in materials under stress, and high-speed cameras capture these ultra-fast crack movements frame by frame.
What is Fracture Mechanics?
• Study of cracks: It looks at small flaws inside materials like metal, glass, or plastics ETC.
• Stress concentration: It measures how force pushes on the sharp tip of a crack.
• Predicting failure: Engineers use it to stop bridges, planes, and machines from breaking suddenly.
• Toughness: It measures how much energy a material can absorb before it snaps.
How High-Speed Cameras See Fractures
• Extreme frame rates: These cameras record from 10,000 to over 1,000,000 frames per second.(fps)
• Freezing motion: Cracks move at the speed of sound in a material. A regular camera sees only a blur, but a high-speed camera makes the movement look like slow motion.
• Special lighting: Bright flashes or lasers light up the tiny crack tip as it opens.
• Visual techniques:
o Digital Image Correlation (DIC): Tracking painted dot patterns on the surface to see how the material stretches.
o Photoelasticity: Using polarized light through clear plastics to show colorful rainbow lines of hidden stress.

• Crack speed: How fast the dark line of the crack rips across the object.
• Crack branching: When one fast crack splits into two or three separate cracks.
