The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), through its Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, joined the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s Pollution Control Department (PCD), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA) in launching the “Thai NuRA” project, formally titled “Seeding a Nutrient Pollution Reduction Strategy for the Coastal Waters of Thailand.”
The project aims to address nutrient pollution and hypoxic (“dead zone”) conditions in Thailand’s coastal waters through an integrated Source-to-Sea management approach.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Mr. Nipon Chamnongsirisak, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Remarks were also delivered by Dr. Pinsak Suraswadi, Director-General of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, and Mr. Jiraphong Khuakarn, Deputy Director-General of the Pollution Control Department.
The event brought together distinguished representatives from government agencies, international organizations, and academia, including Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University; Ms. Isabelle Vanderbeck, International Waters Task Manager at UNEP; Mr. Mahesh Pradhan, Coordinator of COBSEA; and Associate Professor Dr. Ekbodin Winijkul, Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology at AIT.

Under the project, AIT supports Component 3, which focuses on innovative nutrient and wastewater management solutions for the tourism, agriculture, and fishing port sectors. AIT contributes technical expertise in decentralized wastewater treatment, nature-based solutions, pilot implementation, and stakeholder capacity building.
The activities are led by Dr. Atitaya Panuvatvanich from NATS LAB, Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (FCEE), together with the AIT team, supporting technical assessments and pilot implementation in selected coastal areas, including Chonburi, Phetchaburi, and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces.
Dr. Atitaya Panuvatvanich stated:
“Thai NuRA represents a significant step forward in strengthening sustainable coastal and marine pollution management in Thailand through integrated collaboration across all sectors. AIT is pleased to contribute its expertise in wastewater treatment technologies, decentralized sanitation innovations, and nature-based solutions to enhance coastal water quality and strengthen Thailand’s sustainable coastal management capacity.”

สถาบันเทคโนโนยีแห่งเอเชีย (AIT) จับมือ กรมควบคุมมลพิษ (PCD) และ UNEP เปิดตัวโครงการ “Thai NuRA” มุ่งลดมลพิษจากสารอาหาร เพื่อฟื้นฟูระบบนิเวศชายฝั่งไทยอย่างยั่งยืน
โครงการ Thai NuRA หรือ “Seeding a Nutrient Pollution Reduction Strategy for the Coastal Waters of Thailand” มีเป้าหมายในการแก้ไขปัญหามลพิษทางทะเลและภาวะน้ำขาดออกซิเจน (Hypoxic Zones) ผ่านแนวทางการจัดการแบบบูรณาการจากต้นน้ำสู่ทะเล (Source-to-Sea)
การประชุมครั้งนี้ได้รับเกียรติจาก นายนิพนธ์ จำนงสิริศักดิ์ รองปลัดกระทรวงทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม เป็นประธานกล่าวเปิดงาน พร้อมด้วย ดร.ปิ่นสักก์ สุรัสวดี อธิบดีกรมทรัพยากรทางทะเลและชายฝั่ง และนายจิระพงษ์ คูหากาญจน์ รองอธิบดีกรมควบคุมมลพิษ ร่วมกล่าวแสดงความร่วมมือ
นอกจากนี้ ยังมีผู้บริหารระดับสูงและผู้เชี่ยวชาญจากหน่วยงานภาครัฐ องค์กรระหว่างประเทศ และภาควิชาการให้เกียรติเข้าร่วมอย่างพร้อมเพรียง อาทิ ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.วิเลิศ ภูริวัชร อธิการบดีจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย, Ms. Isabelle Vanderbeck, International Waters Task Manager ผู้แทนจาก UNEP, Mr. Mahesh Pradhan, Coordinator of COBSEA ผู้แทนจาก COBSEA และ รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.เอกบดินทร์ วินิจกุล คณบดีคณะวิศวกรรมโยธาและสิ่งแวดล้อม สถาบันเทคโนโลยีแห่งเอเชีย (AIT) รวมถึงภาคีเครือข่ายทางวิชาการ

AIT รับผิดชอบการพัฒนาแนวทางจัดการสารอาหารและน้ำเสียอย่างยั่งยืน โดยเน้นระบบบำบัดน้ำเสียแบบกระจายศูนย์ (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment) และแนวทางธรรมชาติบำบัด (Nature-based Solutions)
ภายใต้โครงการดังกล่าว AIT รับผิดชอบการดำเนินงานในส่วนของ Component 3 ซึ่งมุ่งเน้นการพัฒนาแนวทางการจัดการสารอาหารและน้ำเสียอย่างยั่งยืนและสร้างสรรค์ สำหรับภาคการท่องเที่ยว ภาคเกษตรกรรม และท่าเทียบเรือประมง โดย AIT สนับสนุนองค์ความรู้และความเชี่ยวชาญด้านระบบบำบัดน้ำเสียแบบกระจายศูนย์ (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment) การประยุกต์ใช้แนวทางธรรมชาติเป็นฐาน (Nature-based Solutions) การดำเนินโครงการนำร่อง รวมถึงการเสริมสร้างศักยภาพของผู้มีส่วนได้ส่วนเสีย
กิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ภายใต้โครงการนำโดย ดร.อาทิตยา ภานุวัฒน์วนิชย์ จาก NATS LAB คณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี (FCEE) ร่วมกับทีมวิจัยจาก AIT ในการสนับสนุนการประเมินทางเทคนิคและการดำเนินงานพื้นที่นำร่องในจังหวัดชายฝั่งเป้าหมาย ได้แก่ ชลบุรี เพชรบุรี และประจวบคีรีขันธ์
ดร.อาทิตยา ภานุวัฒน์วนิชย์ กล่าวว่า
“Thai NuRA ถือเป็นก้าวสำคัญในการเสริมสร้างการจัดการมลพิษชายฝั่งและทะเลอย่างยั่งยืนของประเทศไทย ผ่านความร่วมมือแบบบูรณาการจากทุกภาคส่วน AIT มีความยินดีที่ได้ร่วมสนับสนุนองค์ความรู้ด้านเทคโนโลยีบำบัดน้ำเสีย นวัตกรรมระบบสุขาภิบาลแบบกระจายศูนย์ และแนวทางธรรมชาติบำบัด เพื่อยกระดับคุณภาพน้ำชายฝั่งและเสริมสร้างศักยภาพการจัดการชายฝั่งอย่างยั่งยืนให้แก่ประเทศไทย”
ความร่วมมือครั้งนี้ถือเป็นก้าวสำคัญในการยกระดับคุณภาพน้ำชายฝั่ง ฟื้นฟูทะเลไทย และสร้างอนาคตที่ยั่งยืนให้กับระบบนิเวศทางทะเลของประเทศ 🌱💧
