*Starting a centrifugal pump step by step* 🔧
- *Check safety*: Lock out/tag out cleared, guards in place, no personnel near rotating parts
- *Inspect pump*: Check oil levels, coupling guard, seal flush lines, foundation bolts
- *Check suction line*: Suction valve fully open, strainer clean, tank has sufficient level
- *Check discharge line*: Discharge valve closed, recirculation/min-flow line open if required
- *Prime the pump*: Flood suction or use vacuum pump to remove air. Never run dry
- *Check rotation*: Bump start to confirm motor rotation matches arrow on casing
- *Start motor*: Energize the pump with discharge valve closed
- *Open discharge slowly*: Gradually open discharge valve to desired flow, watch amps/pressure
- *Check parameters*: Confirm normal pressure, flow, vibration, temperature, no leaks
- *Monitor NPSH*: Listen for cavitation noise. If you hear gravel sounds, stop immediately
Key rule: suction open, discharge closed at start. Dry running = dead seals 😬
