In engineering, one common tool used by designers is Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Instead of testing a real structure, or object, engineers build a digital model of it and divide it into many tiny elements (small squares or triangles). The computer then calculates how each piece bends, stretches, or compresses and shows where stresses and defects could form. This allows engineers to predict how the structure behaves under different conditions; thus designing it safely and efficiently without guesswork.

This design philosophy is widely used in almost all engineering disciplines from studying car bodies, aeroplane wings and engines to civil structures.

Current Activity: Finite Element analysis and design of a 150,000L commercial underground water tank.

While reinforced concrete controls crack formation and propagation, prestressed concrete eliminates cracks completely most times.

This is because prestressed concrete structural members are always in compression. Meaning that there is no build-up of tension stresses. This is unlike reinforced concrete sections with both tension and compression faces.

Plain concrete sections will always crack due to the poor tensile strength of concrete.

In my opinion, both are alright as long as there is sufficient lapping length (50D) in the former.
