A high corrosion resistance is expected! From the aspect of corrosion, pickling is the best method of removing annealing colours, high-temperature oxide scale, foreign metals and other metal impurities. The corrosion resistance of stainless steels is ensured by a thin, but very dense, film of oxides of the alloy constituents - the passive layer. A disruption to this protective film caused by extraneous rust, high-temperature oxide scale, annealing colours or the mechanical machining of the stainless steel surface can bring about partial corrosion. The basic requirement for the optimal formation of the protective passive layer is that the surface of the stainless steel is as pure metal and as smooth as possible.
