Bollard Refurbishment Completed at the Port of Brighton

As part of LABIDCO’s Asset Integrity Management Program, refurbishment and recertification works were recently completed to the mooring bollards on Berths 2 and 3 at the Port of Brighton.

Mooring bollards are short vertical posts fixed to a dock or quay that transfer the mooring line load (ropes or cables) from a vessel to the berth structure. They are among the most critical pieces of port infrastructure as without them, ships would struggle to stay in position against wind, waves, currents, and tidal forces. Proper bollards not only improve safety but also work together with marine fenders to create a complete berthing system which protects the quay structure and reduce maintenance cost.

The scope of work included:
• Comprehensive visual inspections
• Positive Material Identification (PMI) to confirm the exact type of metal and its composition
• Eddy Current Testing (ECT), which uses magnetic fields to spot cracks or corrosion in metal without damaging it
• Non Destructive Testing (NDT) to check for flaws or weaknesses without harming the material
• Surface preparation, priming, and application of a marine grade protective coating

By integrating advanced testing with preventive maintenance, LABIDCO continues to strengthen its asset integrity framework to reduce risk and ensure berth infrastructure remains fit for purpose to support safe, efficient, and reliable marine operations.
