How much do you really save from engaging directly with a manufacturer in a different time zone, on the other side of the planet? How much are you willing to gamble with receiving your inputs on time and with the right quality? What is the cost of the time spent on managing inbound logistics yourself, when you should be focusing on your busines' core competency? On a normal basis, these questions are relevant, but not so much when you are out of stock of missions-critical raw materials and your production stops. It's like staring down the barrel of a gun and wondering what you had for dinner yesterday.
The most relevant question before things reach dire straits is, what is the cost of peace of mind? Every month I see too many companies go through the ringer, scrambling to find materials close by, in order to avoid the stock rupture nightmare or at least reduce the time/ cost to be out of stock. At that point, hope, prayer and even begging becomes the only game plan. The worst part of it, is that most times, these situations they find themselves in, were not of their own making or under their control. Who do we not see experiencing this? Clients that have a competent partner for Value-Added Warehousing and Distribution - VAWD services. When done right, it's like closing your eyes, while The Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss II plays in the background.
We all have insurance for our businesses, right? There is a form of insurance for when supply chain refuses to behave, when production uses more raws than expected or even when disaster strikes your inventory. Spoiler Alert: It is not shifting your procurement strategy from JIT to Just-In-Case.
