Understanding Rubber Oligomer Leachables in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

Rubber oligomer leachables typically form through interactions between elastomeric materials during the drug manufacturing process.

Elastomers are widely used in pharmaceutical packaging and drug delivery systems due to their excellent sealing properties, flexibility, and compatibility with various formulations. These materials are found in components such as vial closures, gaskets, seals, and drug delivery devices like syringes, infusion pumps, and auto-injectors, among many others.

However, when rubber oligomers interact with small molecules, impurities, peptides, or other substances, they can potentially form compounds that include known carcinogens. As a result, testing for these leachables has become a critical requirement for ensuring the safety and efficacy of drug products.

At TLC, we have successfully synthesized several key rubber oligomer contaminants, which can be used effectively in testing to confirm their absence in drug formulations.
