Last week Nishati-Mix C.E.O, Neema Walter had an opportunity to represent the team in the Youth4Climate Flagship event in Rome, Italy as one of the finalists of Youth4Climate Initiative Program.

The initiative, launched in May 2023 by the government of Italy and UNDP brought together more than 100 young climate leaders from 90 countries to discuss tangible climate solutions.

Throughout the event, we delved into a myriad of compelling topics, from the challenges and opportunities inherent in youth-led climate initiatives to the paramount significance of forging partnerships with private and climate sectors. The theme of climate justice resonated deeply, underscoring the need for equitable solutions.

As a committed visionary leaders in the realm of climate leadership, the plenary workshop on foresight and climate breakthroughs, led by the Innocenti Global Office of Research and Foresight, left an indelible impact on our journey. It illuminated the path forward as we continue my work towards a sustainable future for all.

Figuring out a sustainable solution to plastic wastes is a complex issue and requires each stakeholder to have the capability to demonstrate outstanding leadership skills in complexity so as to come up with solutions that will favour the environmental, social and economic status quo of our world.

The complexity arises because these stakeholders often have conflicting interests. For example, industries may resist stricter regulations to protect their profits, while environmental groups push for stronger measures to reduce plastic pollution. Balancing economic, environmental, and social concerns while transitioning to beating plastic pollution is a complex and multifaceted challenge.

The burning of fossil fuels releases large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. This CO2 is absorbed by the oceans, where it reacts with water to form carbonic acid. This process is causing the oceans to become more acidic, a phenomenon known as ocean acidification. In Africa, the dependence on fossil fuels for energy and industrial processes has led to a significant increase in CO2 emissions.

The repercussions of ocean acidification are profound. Coral reefs, critical marine ecosystems supporting biodiversity and fisheries, are especially vulnerable.

Nishati-Mix Company confront this challenge, by developing a sustainable energy alternative from plastic wastesl to mitigate further ocean acidification. Addressing the root causes can pave the way for a healthier future for both Africa's coastal ecosystems and the communities they support. 🌊🌿🐠 "

Thousands of marine animals, including seals, sea turtles, and marine mammals, get entangled in plastic debris. It's estimated that about 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die every year due to entanglement.

We need to act now!!!!
